Microfluidic flow chambers using reconstituted blood to model hemostasis and platelet transfusion in vitro [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Blood platelets prepared for transfusion gradually lose hemostatic function during storage. Platelet function can be investigated using a variety of (indirect) in vitro experiments, but none of these is as comprehensive as microfluidic flow chambers.

Myricetin, the main flavonoid in Syzygium cumini leaf, is a novel inhibitor of platelet thiol isomerases PDI and ERp5 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background: Flavonoids have been characterized as a prominent class of compounds to treat thrombotic diseases through the inhibition of thiol isomerases. Syzygium cumini is a flavonoid-rich medicinal plant that contains myricetin and gallic acid.

Platelet transfusions [PDF]

open access: yesThe Lancet, 2007
Ever since platelet transfusions were shown to reduce mortality from haemorrhage in patients with acute leukaemia in the 1950s, the use of this therapy has steadily grown to become an essential part of the treatment of cancer, haematological malignancies, marrow failure, and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Overcoming challenges in developing small molecule inhibitors for GPVI and CLEC-2

open access: yesPlatelets, 2021
GPVI and CLEC-2 have emerged as promising targets for long-term prevention of both arterial thrombosis and thrombo-inflammation with a decreased bleeding risk relative to current drugs.

Inhibitor of DNA binding‐1 is a key regulator of cancer cell vasculogenic mimicry

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Elevated expression of transcriptional regulator inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (ID1) promoted cancer cell‐mediated vasculogenic mimicry (VM) through regulation of pro‐angiogenic and pro‐cancerous genes (e.g. VE‐cadherin (CDH5), TIE2, MMP9, DKK1). Higher ID1 expression also increased metastases to the lung and the liver.

Bulk and interfacial properties of binary hard-platelet fluids

open access: yes, 2003
Interfaces between demixed fluid phases of binary mixtures of hard platelets are investigated using density-functional theory. The corresponding excess free energy functional is calculated within a fundamental measure theory adapted to the Zwanzig model,

Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) profiling of COVID–19 patients

open access: yesPlatelets, 2021
We evaluated coagulation abnormalities via traditional tests and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) in a group of 94 patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection and different severity of pneumonia (34 moderate, 25 severe, 35 critical) with the ...

Tonic signaling of the B‐cell antigen‐specific receptor is a common functional hallmark in chronic lymphocytic leukemia cell phosphoproteomes at early disease stages

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
B‐cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B‐CLL) and monoclonal B‐cell lymphocytosis (MBL) show altered proteomes and phosphoproteomes, analyzed using mass spectrometry, protein microarrays, and western blotting. Identifying 2970 proteins and 316 phosphoproteins, including 55 novel phosphopeptides, we reveal BCR and NF‐kβ/STAT3 signaling in disease ...

A platelet alpha-granule membrane protein (GMP-140) is expressed on the plasma membrane after activation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
We have previously characterized a monoclonal antibody, S12, that binds only to activated platelets (McEver, R.P., and M.N. Martin, 1984, J. Biol. Chem., 259:9799-9804). It identifies a platelet membrane protein of Mr 140,000, which we have designated as

Efficacy and safety of abciximab versus tirofiban in addition to ticagrelor in STEMI patients undergoing primary percutaneous intervention

open access: yesPlatelets, 2022
Platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors (GPIs) have been part of the adjuvant treatment of acute coronary syndrome for years. However, real-life data regarding the efficacy and safety of GPIs under the current indications are lacking in the setting of ...
