Penetration of Cefazolin into Pleural Fluid [PDF]

open access: greenAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 1977
Single doses of cefazolin, 500 mg intramuscularly and 1 g intravenously, were administered to 16 patients having lung pathology who were scheduled for thoracic fluid aspiration. Pleural fluid and serum samples were taken at intervals of 30 to 240 min for determination of cefazolin levels.

Pleural Fluid Analysis in Neutropenia [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of the American Thoracic Society, 2021
ABSTRACTLight’s criteria is the standard for determining the etiology of pleural effusions. Test characteristics of Light’s criteria varies in different populations, and Light’s criteria may misclassify effusions in patients with impaired immunity such as in neutropenia.

Pleural Fluid Resolution Is Associated with Improved Survival in Patients with Malignant Pleural Effusion [PDF]

open access: yesLife, 2023
Malignant pleural effusion is associated with a poor prognosis and, while risk stratification models exist, prior studies have not evaluated pleural fluid resolution and its association with survival.

Clinical overview of the physiology and pathophysiology of pleural fluid movement: a narrative review [PDF]

open access: yesERJ Open Research
In physiological conditions, the pleural space couples the lung with the chest wall and contains a small amount of fluid in continuous turnover. The volume of pleural fluid is the result from the balance between the entry of fluid through the pleural ...

Utilizing thoracic ultrasonography in determining the characteristics of pleural fluid: Development of a novel sonographic scoring system [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Thoracic Medicine
BACKGROUND: To evaluate the utility of thoracic ultrasound imaging (USI) in assessing the nature of pleural fluid (PF) using a scoring system. METHODS: The files of patients who underwent thoracic USI and thoracentesis due to PF accumulation were ...

Pleural fluid agitation for improving the microbiologic diagnostic yield in pleural infection: a feasibility study [PDF]

open access: yesRespiratory Research
Background Pleural infection is a commonly encountered respiratory disease but in > 40% the underlying microbiologic etiology is unknown. This feasibility study aims to investigate whether pleural fluid agitation prior to sample aspiration is safe and ...

Combined Uric Acid and Cholesterol Pleural Fluid Levels as Biochemical Markers for Differentiation between Transudative and Exudative Pleural Effusions [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Arts, 2022
Background: Pleural effusion results from an abnormal pathophysiological state of the equilibrium between pleural fluid formation and removal. Normally, pleural space contains about 10 ml of fluid on each side.

The role of pleural fluid lactate dehydrogenase-to-adenosine deaminase ratio in differentiating the etiology of pleural effusions

open access: yesChinese Journal of Physiology, 2022
Exudative pleural effusion includes tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE), parapneumonic pleural effusion (PPE), and malignant pleural effusion (MPE). An elevated pleural fluid adenosine deaminase (ADA) typically implies TPE, but the rule may not apply to ...
