Large Amplitude Whistler Waves in Earth's Plasmasphere and Plasmaspheric Plumes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Whistler mode waves in the plasmasphere and plumes drive significant losses of energetic electrons from the Earth's radiation belts into the upper atmosphere.

In Situ Collection of Nanoparticles during Femtosecond Laser Machining in Air

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2021
Nanoparticles generated during laser material processing are often seen as annoying side products, yet they might find useful application upon proper collection.

Development and stability of gyrotactic plumes in bioconvection [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Using the continuum model of Pedley, Hill and Kessler (1988) for bioconvection in a suspension of swimming, gyrotactic micro-organisms, we investigate the existence and stability of a two-dimensional plume in tall, narrow chambers with stress-free ...

Surface Tension Measurement of Ti‐6Al‐4V by Falling Droplet Method in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, the temperature‐dependent surface tension of free falling, oscillating Ti‐6Al‐4V droplets is investigated in both argon and monosilane doped, oxygen‐free atmosphere. Droplet temperature and oscillation are captured with one single high‐speed camera, and the surface tension is calculated with Rayleigh's formula.

Simultaneous Sampling of Flow and Odorants by Crustaceans can Aid Searches within a Turbulent Plume

open access: yesSensors, 2013
Crustaceans such as crabs, lobsters and crayfish use dispersing odorant molecules to determine the location of predators, prey, potential mates and habitat.

Toward Knowledge‐Based Workflows: A Semantic Approach to Atomistic Simulations for Mechanical and Thermodynamic Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Knowledge‐based atomistic workflows are presented for mechanical and thermodynamic properties. By coupling modular simulations with ontology‐aligned metadata and provenance, Fe case studies on elastic behavior, defects, thermal properties, and Hall–Petch strengthening reveal how FAIR, queryable, and reusable simulation data can be generated. Mechanical

Atomic Layer Deposition in Transistors and Monolithic 3D Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Transistors are fundamental building blocks of modern electronics. This review summarizes recent progress in atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the synthesis of two‐dimensional (2D) metal oxides and transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), with particular emphasis on their enabling role in monolithic three‐dimensional (M3D) integration for next ...

Engineering Intelligent Graphene Oxide‐Cellulose Membranes: Suppressing Thermal Runaway for a Safer Aqueous Zinc‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A novel thermos‐responsive hydroxypropyl cellulose/graphene oxide (HPC/GO) composite membrane is fabricated for reversible temperature‐gated ion transport in aqueous zinc‐ion batteries. Enabled by LCST‐driven structural transition, unimpeded ion diffusion at room temperature delivers high capacity, while elevated temperature suppresses transport; full ...

Split-beam echosounder observations of natural methane seep variability in the northern Gulf of Mexico [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A method for positioning and characterizing plumes of bubbles from marine gas seeps using an 18 kHz scientific split-beam echo sounder (SBES) was developed and applied to acoustic observations of plumes of presumed methane gas bubbles originating at ...

Entrainment in pulsing plumes [PDF]

open access: yesExperiments in Fluids, 2019
Turbulent axisymmetric lazy plumes produced by discharging saline fluid downwards into a less dense uniform environment from a round pipe are examined experimentally. The plume development is controlled by the source flow rate $$Q_0$$
