This paper describes advances in the development of several electrooptic shutter devices utilizing the quadratic electrooptic effect of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) ceramic wafers. Aperture sizes utilized in these PLZT devices ranged from 25 microm to 0.25 m.

PLZT Electrooptic Shutter

Luminescence of PLZT ceramics

Abstract Spectra, kinetics and thermal behavior of photoluminescence in PLZT X/65/35 ceramics have been studied with respect to different concentrations of different sorts of defects (inherent: lead and oxygen vacancies and dopant-induced by Mn, Fe, Co, Ni). The features observed are shown to be related to disordering of the material.

Local structure of PLZT

The local structure of PLZT has been examined by the means of neutron-powder-diffraction derived pair-distribution function (PDF). We find that atoms are displaced from the average periodic structure by a significant amount. The directions and magnitudes of the atomic displacements in PLZT are very similar to those found in PMN.

Abstract Optical properties of PLZT(8/70/30) in various phases were studied by using HAUP method. Ferroelectric phase was found to be optically. active. From this result, it was revealed that the point group of PLZT should be C3 in the rhombohedral system(ferroelectric phase).
