Light‐Actuated Fiber‐Climbing Inchworm Robot Toward Endoluminal Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A kirigami‐inspired soft inchworm robot harnesses optical energy from a customized side‐emitting optical fiber, guaranteeing its propulsion along the fiber body. The wavelength‐selective responsiveness of dye‐functionalized liquid crystal elastomers and the application of temporal illumination patterns enable sequential control of robot components. The

3D-printing allows for fluid-controlled linear actuators with unconventional shapes

open access: yesHeliyon
Background: Pneumatic actuators are widely used in applications like (medical) robots, or prostheses. Pneumatic actuators require a complex manufacturing process and are produced in standardized dimensions to reduce costs.

Texoskeletons: Developing the Fundamental Technologies for Creating Intelligent Soft Robotic Clothing With Integrated 1D Sensors and Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Traditional wearable exoskeletons rely on rigid structures, which limit comfort, flexibility, and everyday usability. This work introduces the fundamental technologies to create the first soft, lightweight, intelligent textile‐based exoskeletons (Texoskeletons) built using 1D sensors and actuators.

Novel Design of a Soft–Rigid Hybrid Pneumatic Actuator Incorporating a Spine-like Internal Structure

open access: yesRobotics
Soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs) are widely used in robotic systems due to their inherent compliance and safety during human–robot interaction. However, their intrinsic softness often leads to insufficient stiffness and a low load-bearing capacity, which ...

A Procedure for the Fatigue Life Prediction of Straight Fibers Pneumatic Muscles

open access: yesActuators, 2021
Different from the McKibben pneumatic muscle actuator, the straight fibers one is made of an elastomeric tube closed at the two ends by two heads that ensure a mechanical and pneumatic seal.

Dual‐Mode Magnetic Elastomer for On‐Demand Motion and Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dual‐mode magnetic elastomer is introduced, enabling DC field‐driven programmable actuation and AC field‐driven magnetothermal degradation. GHz‐range magnetic fields generate ultrafast heating of magnetic nanoparticles that activates cleavage of the silicone elastomer matrix.

Modelling a Loaded Two-Way Pneumatic Actuator

open access: yesMeasurement + Control, 1976
This paper describes experiments on a low-pressure pneumatic actuator and load. An impulse test is described, in which the transient behaviour of a loaded actuator, operating in a particularly simple mode, was observed.

Single chamber multiple degree-of-freedom soft pneumatic actuator enabled by adjustable stiffness layers

open access: yesSmart materials and structures (Print), 2019
Soft pneumatic actuators promise simple, adaptable, and safe manipulation, but the nature of pneumatic circuits limits the scalability of this approach. This paper introduces a method to augment the degrees-of-freedom of soft pneumatic actuators without ...

3D Printing Innovations in Polymeric Porous and Patterned Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymeric foams occupy a unique structural space between dense solids and open networks, where engineered void fraction governs mechanical compliance, thermal resistance, and mass transport. Additive manufacturing now enables precise spatial control over cellular architecture, unlocking designer foam structures across applications spanning crash ...
