Pneumococcal carriage, serotype distribution and risk factors in children with community-acquired pneumonia, 5 years after introduction of the 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Ethiopia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background: There is a scarcity of data on pneumococcal serotypes carried by children in Ethiopia. We studied pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage rate, serotypes, and risk factors among children with community acquired pneumonia (CAP).

House Dust Mite Aeroallergen Suppresses Leukocyte Phagocytosis and Netosis Initiated by Pneumococcal Lung Infection

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2022
Asthmatics are highly susceptible to developing lower respiratory tract infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (SPN, the pneumococcus). It has recently emerged that underlying allergic airway disease creates a lung microenvironment that is ...

A cardinal role for cathepsin D in co-ordinating the host-mediated apoptosis of macrophages and killing of pneumococci [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The bactericidal function of macrophages against pneumococci is enhanced by their apoptotic demise, which is controlled by the anti-apoptotic protein Mcl-1.

Prevention of pneumococcal diseases in the post-seven valent vaccine era: A European perspective

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2012
Background The burden of invasive pneumococcal disease in young children decreased dramatically following introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7). The epidemiology of S.

Invasive pneumococcal infections in children following transplantation in the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine era

open access: yesTransplant Infectious Disease, 2015
Pediatric recipients of hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplants are at increased risk of invasive pneumococcal infections (IPI). Data on IPI in this population are scarce.

IL-6 Prevents Lung Macrophage Death and Lung Inflammation Injury by Inhibiting GSDME- and GSDMD-Mediated Pyroptosis during Pneumococcal Pneumosepsis

open access: yesMicrobiology spectrum, 2022
Pneumococcal pneumonia has been a significant cause of morbidity and mortality throughout human history. Failing to control pneumococcal pneumonia and resolve ongoing inflammation in a host can cause sepsis, namely pneumococcal pneumosepsis, and death ...

Low Baseline Pneumococcal Antibody Titers Predict Specific Antibody Deficiency, Increased Upper Respiratory Infections, and Allergy Sensitization. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background:Inadequate titers of pneumococcal antibody (PA) are commonly present among patients with recurrent respiratory infections. Objective:We sought to determine the effect of the degree of inadequacy in baseline PA titers on the subsequent ...

Acquisition of pneumococci specific effector and regulatory Cd4+ T cells localising within human upper respiratory-tract mucosal lymphoid tissue [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The upper respiratory tract mucosa is the location for commensal Streptococcus (S.) pneumoniae colonization and therefore represents a major site of contact between host and bacteria.

Pneumococcal infection in the newborn. [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Disease in Childhood, 1993
Two fatal cases of invasive pneumococcal disease in the newborn are reported, both acquired from the maternal vagina. The rarity of vaginal carriage of pneumococcus suggests that this organism has a higher invasion to colonisation ratio than group B streptococcus and maternal carriage or neonatal colonisation should be more aggressively treated.

Meningitis, spondylodiscitis, pneumonia and septic shock with Streptococcus pneumoniae in a previously healthy woman with isolated IgG2-, IgG3-, IgA-deficiency and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance

open access: yesInfectious Disease Reports, 2018
A 66 years old Caucasian woman with pneumococcal meningitis was treated and discharged after an uncomplicated course. Five months later she was readmitted withfever and right side abdominal pain and diagnosed with pneumococcal spondylodiscitis.
