Rationale for Prolonged Glucocorticoid Use in Pediatric ARDS: What the Adults Can Teach Us. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Based on molecular mechanisms and physiologic data, a strong association has been established between dysregulated systemic inflammation and progression of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

β-Glucans Are Masked but Contribute to Pulmonary Inflammation During Pneumocystis Pneumonia.

open access: yesJournal of Infectious Diseases, 2016
β-glucans, which can activate innate immune responses, are a major component in the cell wall of the cyst form of Pneumocystis In the current study, we examined whether β-1,3-glucans are masked by surface proteins in Pneumocystis and what role β-glucans ...

Pharmacokinetics of dolutegravir, tenofovir and lamivudine during venous–venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV‐ECMO): A case report

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Volume 92, Issue 5, Page 1487-1492, May 2026.
While providing potentially life‐saving cardiorespiratory support for critically ill patients, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) may detrimentally affect pharmacokinetic (PK) performance and concurrent drug efficacy and safety. We describe a patient with Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) in the context of acquired immunodeficiency ...

A novel case of autosomal recessive CARD11 loss‐of‐function underlying impaired antiviral immunity and a review of literature

open access: yesClinical &Translational Immunology, Volume 15, Issue 5, 2026.
We report on a patient homozygous for a novel autosomal recessive loss‐of‐function CARD11 variant, with susceptibility to live attenuated virus (LAV) vaccines and impaired clearance of multiple naturally acquired respiratory viral infections. Inborn errors of immunity affecting the CARD11‐BCL10‐MALT1 (CBM) complex should be considered in individuals ...

Update on the diagnosis and treatment of pneumonia

open access: yesTherapeutic Advances in Respiratory Disease, 2011
Pneumocystis is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes an often-lethal pneumonia in immunocompromised hosts. Although the organism was discovered in the early 1900s, the first cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia in humans were initially recognized in ...

A protracted course of Pneumocystis pneumonia in the setting of an immunosuppressed child with GMS-negative bronchoalveolar lavage

open access: yesMedical Mycology Case Reports, 2016
We report a case of Pneumocystis pneumonia in a 5-year-old male with Trisomy 21 and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The lack of response to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole raised concerns for antimicrobial resistance.

Activated immune cells present a lung interstitial‐to‐airway/alveolar cross‐compartment sharing pattern in severe pneumonia

open access: yesClinical and Translational Medicine, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
The interstitial‐to‐airway cross‐compartment sharing pattern of activated immune cells provides new insights for severe pneumonia. Macrophages could amplify local immune response by recruiting specific activated immune cells via CXCL10–CXCR3 signalling into airway, while other immune cells reside with limited inflammatory activity.

pneumonia in a healthy immunocompetent patient: A case report and literature review

open access: yesSAGE Open Medical Case Reports
Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, typically an opportunistic infection, is commonly associated with risk factors such as low CD4+ lymphocyte count, underlying malignancies, organ transplantation, or immunosuppressive medications.

Marked improvement in survival among adult Croatian AIDS patients after the introduction of highly active antiretroviral treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We compared the survival of patients following the first AIDS event in Croatia from the period 1986-1996 to the period 1997-2000. A total of 72 (81.8%) out of 88 patients from 1986-1996 and 18 (32.1%) out of 56 from 1997-2000 died. Survival following the
