Imaging Case Study of the Month Traumatic Pneumolabyrinth

Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, 2008
Pneumolabyrinth is a condition in which air is present in the vestibule and/or in the cochlea. Air inside the inner ear structures is uncommon, and is not detected even in otic capsule–violating fractures or in transverse fractures of the temporal bone. It is rarely described in the literature.

Traumatic perilymphatic fistula with pneumolabyrinth: Diagnosis and management

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, 2011
AbstractA perilymphatic fistula (PLF) is an abnormal communication between the inner and middle ear resulting in vestibular or cochlear symptoms. We review three pediatric traumatic temporal bone fractures with pneumolabyrinth, confirmed radiologically by the presence of air within the cochlea (pneumocochlea) or vestibule (pneumovestibule).

Computed tomography of bilateral pneumolabyrinth

Emergency Radiology, 1998
We report the first case of bilateral pneumolabyrinth documented by computed tomography and the first case of spontaneous recovery of sensorineural hearing deficit associated with pneumolabyrinth. The presence of pneumolabyrinth (air within the otic capsule) is an important radiographic sign of inner ear compromise resulting in sensorineural hearing ...

Traumatic stapes fracture with rotation and subluxation into the vestibule and pneumolabyrinth

Laryngoscope, 2009
AbstractA 41‐year‐old man presented after forceful penetrating ear injury. He had incapacitating vestibular symptoms. Computed tomography revealed pneumolabyrinth with a fractured stapes that was >90° rotated and subluxed into the vestibule, such that the crura and capitulum could be seen in the vestibule.

The Potential for Preserved Cochleovestibular Function in the Setting of Prolonged Pneumolabyrinth

open access: yesOtology & Neurotology, 2020
Objective: To discuss the natural history and management of pneumolabyrinth, with particular attention to illustrative cases where hearing improved after a fluid-filled vestibule was restored. Patients: Adults at two academic medical centers with documented pneumolabyrinth on ...

Post-traumatic pneumolabyrinth: a rare cause of hearing loss

Emergency Radiology, 2020
Pneumolabyrinth (PL) is the presence of air within the vestibule, semicircular canals, or cochlea. It represents an abnormal connection between the inner ear and middle ear spaces. PL most commonly occurs after blunt head trauma, followed by penetrating injuries. Temporal fractures may or may not accompany.

Pneumolabyrinth as a postoperative complication of stapedoplasty

Medicine of Extreme Situations, 2022
Pneumolabyrinth is characterized by the presence of air in the inner ear due to intrusion from the tympanic cavity. It is a rare complication of stapedoplasty. Currently, there is no clear algorithm for treatment of this complication. The paper reports two cases of pneumolabyrinth being the short-term and long-term postoperative complications.

Stapediovestibular dislocation with pneumolabyrinth

The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 2007
AbstractTraumatic luxation of the stapes into the vestibule is a rare entity, and the disease complicated with pneumolabyrinth is extremely rare. We report the case of a 72-year-old woman with pneumolabyrinth associated with a stapediovestibular dislocation. The patient presented with vertigo and nystagmus following penetrating trauma to the middle ear.

Traumatic Pneumolabyrinth

Otology & Neurotology, 2012
To describe 3 cases of pneumolabyrinth after penetrating injury to the middle ear and to review previously reported cases, comparing precipitating factors and hearing outcomes.Three cases we encountered and the PubMed and Japan Medical Abstracts Society databases. In addition to our 3 cases, we identified 48 cases from 41 articles regarding ...
