Investigation into the effect of length to diameter ratio on the point load strength index of Gosford sandstone

open access: yes, 2015
Since the introduction of the point load test, size effect has been observed in the point load strength index. While considerable research has been undertaken to investigate the size effect in the point load strength index, and the general cause of size ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

CORRELATIONS BETWEEN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES AND POINT LOAD STRENGTH INDEX OF PRASINITES: A CASE STUDY FROM EAST ATTICA PREFECTURE

open access: yes, 2017
The aim of this study is to investigate the statistical correlations between the point load strength index and certain physical properties, e.g. the dry density and the dry longitudinal ultrasonic wave velocity of prasinites (metabasites).

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Research on Flexural Properties and Flexural Toughness Evaluation Method of Steel Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites under Polar Low Temperatures

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering
In this research, five groups of steel fiber reinforced cementitious composite (SFRCC) with different fiber volume content (0%, 0.5%, 1.0% 1.5%, and 2.0%) were designed to perform four-point flexural tests on beam specimens to study the effects of polar ...

Optimal Planning Method of On-load Capacity Regulating Distribution Transformers in Urban Distribution Networks after Electric Energy Replacement Considering Uncertainties

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
Electric energy replacement is the umbrella term for the use of electric energy to replace oil (e.g., electric automobiles), coal (e.g., electric heating), and gas (e.g., electric cooking appliances), which increases the electrical load peak, causing ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Correlation between point load index and compressive strength for quartzite rocks

open access: yes, 2004
The point load test is widely used to determine the uniaxial compressive strength indirectly because of its ease of testing simplicity of sample preparation and possible field application.
