Fracture model with variable range of interaction

open access: yes, 2002
We introduce a fiber bundle model where the interaction among fibers is modeled by an adjustable stress-transfer function which can interpolate between the two limiting cases of load redistribution, the global and the local load sharing schemes.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Data traffic load balancing and QoS in IEEE 802.11 network: Experimental study of the signal strength effect

open access: yes, 2012
The performances of multimedia applications built on wireless systems depend on bandwidth availability that might heavily affect the quality of service.

ATF4‐mediated stress response as a therapeutic vulnerability in chordoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We screened 5 chordoma cell lines against 100+ inhibitors of epigenetic and metabolic pathways and kinases and identified halofuginone, a tRNA synthetase inhibitor. Mechanistically halofuginone induces an integrated stress response, with eIF2alpha phosphorylation, activation of ATF4 and its target genes CHOP, ASNS, INHBE leading to cell death ...

Buckling and strength analysis of panels with discrete stiffness tailoring [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Continuous variation of stiffness across flat plates has been shown, theoretically, to improve buckling performance by up to 60%. However, steered fibre manufacturing methods cannot achieve the minimum radius of curvature required for improvement whilst ...

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Evaluation of empirical estimation of uniaxial compressive strength of rock using measurements from index and physical tests

open access: yesJournal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 2020
The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of rock is an important parameter required for design and analysis of rock structures, and rock mass classification. Uniaxial compression test is the direct method to obtain the UCS values. However, these tests are

The plastic limit of clays [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The plastic limit of soils was first described by Atterberg in 1911. The thread-rolling test was standardised at the US Public Roads Bureau in the 1920s and 1930s, and has subsequently become one of the standard tests of soil mechanics.

Identification of serum protein biomarkers for pre‐cancerous lesions associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This work identified serum proteins associated with pancreatic epithelial neoplasms (PanINs) and early‐stage PDAC. Proteomics screens assessed genetically engineered mice with abundant PanINs, KPC mice (Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐KrasG12D/+ Lox‐STOP‐Lox‐Trp53R172H/+ Pdx1‐Cre) before PDAC development and also early‐stage PDAC patients (n = 31), compared to benign ...

Experimental Study on Mudstone’s Strength Characteristics in Deep-Buried Coal-Measure Formation: A Case Study of Permian Longtan Formation

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2021
To investigate the strength characteristics of mudstone in deep-buried coal-measure formation, four types of experiments have been conducted: (i) the X-ray diffraction (XRD) test; (ii) the scanning electron microscope (SEM) scanning test; (iii) the point
