Estimation of the strength of Nubian sandstone formation from point load test index and other simple parameters

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
This study investigates the correlation of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and the point load test (PLT) index Is(50), bulk density, water absorption and the RQD properties of the Sudanese Nubian sandstone formation.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Static Test of Flexo Compression in Posterior Thoracolumbar Spinal Fixation with Conical Cylindrical Screws

open access: yesGlobal Spine Journal, 2016
Introduction The aim of this paper is to describe the results obtained of a static test of flexo compression in polyaxial transpedicular conical cylindrical screws; which we have used for more than 20 years; in posteriors thoracolumbar spine fixings ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Optimization of applied loads for assessing load-velocity relationship during back squat.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
PurposeThis study aimed to identify the lightest load to validate the load-velocity (L-V) relationship in the back squat using the modified multiple-point (a lower highest load compared to the standard method) and in-field two-point methods ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.
