Modelling of polar bear populations by the Leslie matrix population model

open access: yes, 2010
Some general doubts have been voiced regarding the soundness of using a Leslie matrix population projection on polar bear ...

Late Pleistocene fossil find in Svalbard: the oldest remains of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus Phipps, 1744) ever discovered

open access: yes, 2009
During recent fieldwork in Svalbard, a well preserved subfossil left mandible of a polar bear (Ursus maritimus Phipps, 1774) was discovered. A 14C age determination shows that it is older than 45 Ky (kilo-years), and an age determination with infrared ...

Toward a non‐invasive inuit polar bear survey: Genetic data from polar bear hair snags

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2013
We explore the feasibility of collecting microsatellite genotypes of non‐invasively collected hair from free‐ranging polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in M'Clintock Channel, Nunavut, Canada.

Ikona, świadek, ofiara. Niedźwiedź polarny jako figura wizualna dyskursu zmiany klimatu

open access: yesZagadnienia Rodzajów Literackich, 2021
The article focuses on the media practice of using visual representations of polar bears to illustrate information about climate change. It starts with a short description about the iconic status that climate discourse attributes to these type of images.

Polar bear predation on ringed seals in the fast-ice of Hornsund, Svalbard

open access: yes, 1986
Polar bear hunting success on ringed seals in subnivean lairs and basking on the fast ice, was studied in Hornsund, Svalbard. A few bears were observed while actually hunting, but in most cases bear tracks were followed by snowmobile to determine the ...

Capturing environmental DNA in snow tracks of polar bear, Eurasian lynx and snow leopard towards individual identification

open access: yesFrontiers in Conservation Science, 2023
Polar bears (Ursus maritimus), Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) and snow leopards (Panthera uncia) are elusive large carnivores inhabiting snow-covered and remote areas.

Polar bear hunt strategies evaluated by a Leslie matrix population model

open access: yes, 2010
An APL program for a Leslie matrix population projection is developed and applied to analysis of a Canadian polar bear population. Hunting specified with respect to sex ratio within a total quota may be included in the projections.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.
