Banding and polarization in driven multistable materials

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics
We study a disordered network of bistable bonds subjected to periodic strain. The model is inspired by experiments on crumpled sheets, and it features behaviors associated with glasses, including a complex energy landscape, memories, and large avalanches.

Design Of Polar Materials Using Materials Informatics and First-Principles Calculations

open access: yes, 2022
Polar materials have a dipole moment or polarization. Ferroelectrics are a special class of polar materials wherein the polarization can be switched with an external electric field.

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Atomic-level polarization reversal in sliding ferroelectric semiconductors

open access: yesNature Communications
Intriguing “slidetronics” has been reported in van der Waals (vdW) layered non-centrosymmetric materials and newly-emerging artificially-tuned twisted moiré superlattices, but correlative experiments that spatially track the interlayer sliding dynamics ...

Environmental pollutants from the Scott and Shackleton expeditions during the ‘Heroic Age’ of Antarctic exploration

open access: yes, 2003
Early explorers to Antarctica built wooden huts and brought huge quantities of supplies and equipment to support their geographical and scientific studies for several years.

COMP–PMEPA1 axis promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in breast cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) promotes epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in breast cancer. We identify PMEPA1 (protein TMEPAI) as a novel COMP‐binding partner that mediates EMT via binding to the TSP domains of COMP, establishing the COMP–PMEPA1 axis as a key EMT driver in breast cancer.

Experimental demonstration of optical activity and phonon chirality in orthorhombic van der Waals group-IV monochalcogenides

open access: yesNano Research
The chiral behavior of phonons has been verified in achiral van der Waals (vdW) layered hexagonal lattices but lacks of experimental evidences in achiral orthorhombic materials like vdW-layered MX (M = Ge, Sn; X = Se, S).

Polar meron-antimeron networks in strained and twisted bilayers

open access: yes, 2023
Out-of-plane polar domain structures have recently been discovered in strained and twisted bilayers of inversion symmetry broken systems such as hexagonal boron nitride. Here we show that this symmetry breaking also gives rise to an in-plane component of

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Heavy metals in water, ice and biological material from Spitsbergen, Svalbard

open access: yes, 1992
Concentrations of heavy metals Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, Ni, Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg and Co were determined in surface waters, glacier ice and plant and animal materials from three regions in Spitsbergen, Svalbard.
