Polarization coupling in twisted elliptical optical fiber
Applied Optics, 1980The polarization of twisted fiber with elliptical cross section was analyzed using the Marcuse mode-coupling theory. It was concluded that twist coupling is not effective unless the twist is fast (several rads/m). Experimental results qualitatively agree with the analysis.

Polarization coupling in kinked single-mode fibers
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1982When a fiber is stretched over a small ridge on a drum, the modifications of the distributions of curvature and of lateral force near the ridge induce extra birefringence in the fiber. Many such kinks, distributed randomly along a high-birefringence fiber, degrade the polarization-holding quality of the fiber.

Dynamic polarization coupling in elliptical-core photosensitive optical fiber
Optics Letters, 1992The dynamic energy exchange between the two orthogonal modes of an elliptical-core photosensitive optical fiber was measured. We found that the polarization of the light in the fiber always tends to move toward the fast axis, which implies an asymmetry in the photosensitive properties of the fiber.

Distributed fiber sensing by using nonlinearly induced polarization coupling
Optics Letters, 1992The power exchange between the two principal polarizations of a linear wave occurs only within a region of interaction with a counterpropagating nonlinear-optical pulse as a result of induced polarization coupling between the two waves in a single-mode fiber. An analytical solution of the power exchange is obtained.

Detection of distributed polarization coupling in high birefringence fibers
SPIE Proceedings, 2002White light interferometry has been adopted to measure the distributed polarization coupling in high birefringence fibers. A superluminescent diode is adopted as the optical source in the white light interferometer. To enlarge the measurement range, the light beam in the scanning arm of the Michelson interferometer is reflected three times.

Tailoring birefringence and polarization coupling in photonic crystal fibers
SPIE Proceedings, 2004We report on the birefringence of photonic crystal fibers as functions of fiber structure parameters and incident wavelength. It is found that the sign of the fiber birefringence can be changed by controlling the incident wavelength. The guided-mode coupling properties of the dual-core photonic crystal fibers are highly engineerable by tailoring the ...

Nonlinear polarization coupling and instabilities in single-mode liquid-cored optical fibers
Optics Letters, 1992Polarization coupling is demonstrated in a 0.1-m-long length of nitrobenzene-cored weakly birefringent single-mode optical fiber. Self-switching of the launched mode to the orthogonal polarization is observed at peak powers as low as 1 W. A total phase shift of at least 12pi was induced at a launched peak power of approximately 10 W.

The principle of the mode cross coupling in polarization-maintaining fiber based on white-light interferometry was analyzed. The method of measuring the polarization mode coupling with a spatial Michelson interferometer was presented. Analysis and emulation were carried out for the vibration disturbance signal caused by the mechanical scanning and the ...
