Abstract Michelson interferometer (MI) is used to measure distributed polarization coupling signal in high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers. Compared with space-light MI, the direct current (DC) components of interferograms of all-fiber MI fluctuate more intensely.

The polarization stability of optical fibers is significantly improved by birefringent fibers. In optical communication systems, polarization coupling between two eigenpolarizations comes generally from random mechanical deformations of the optical fiber. Thus the polarization stability depends on the statistical property of such deformations.

A set of coupled power equations that is applicable to the general case of a quasi-monochromatic light source is derived from the set of coupled amplitude equations for single-mode single polarization (SMSP). The spectral densities of Lorentzian-shaped and Gaussian-shaped distributions are characterized for the quasi-monochromatic light source.

We demonstrate a novel method to characterize structural irregularities in a highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber (HB PCF) with high accuracy based on polarization coupling by torsional acoustic wave. Birefringence variation induced by the irregularities of air-hole structure in the fiber cross-section is analyzed via the transmission spectra of ...

AbstractThe effect of polarization coupling which occurs in the coupler comprising the ring resonator for a fiber‐optic ring‐resonator gyro was studied. First, it is confirmed theoretically and experimentally that the resonant waveform in the ring resonator changes significantly by the polarization coupling.

A white light interferometer is developed to measure the distributed polarization coupling in high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs). Usually the birefringence dispersion between two orthogonal eigenmodes of PMFs is neglected in such systems. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the birefringence dispersion becomes
