Polarization Coupling Characteristic of Polarization Maintaining Fiber Under Transversal Force

ACTA PHOTONICA SINICA, 2011
Based on the photo-elastic effect and index ellipsoid, the relationship between transverse force and dielectric constant variation of polarization maintaining fiber(PMF) was obtained under the consideration of the difference between isotropic and anisotropic optical fiber under transverse force.Polarization coupling characteristic of PMF under ...

Single-mode single-polarization fibers: effects of a residual polarization coupling

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1985
Intentional birefringence induces an excess loss on one of the two polarization states of a single-mode optical fiber. Yet it may be not sufficient to avoid polarization coupling completely. In this case, we have some undesired effects, such as excess attenuation of the desired polarization as well, finite value of the extinction ratio, and residual ...

Sensitivity enhancement of distributed polarization coupling detection in Hi-Bi fibers

Chinese Optics Letters, 2012
The intensity and position of the coupling points in high birefringence (Hi-Bi) fibers can be detected effectively using distributed polarization coupling (DPC) detection. The detection sensitivity can decrease due to mechanical vibration disturbance and environment noise.

Polarization coupling power in single-mode single-polarization optical fibers

Optics Letters, 1989
A set of coupled power equations has been derived from a set of coupled amplitude equations for a single-mode single-polarization (SMSP) optical fiber. Our results indicate that the power coupling coefficients are related not only to the birefringence of the SMSP fiber but also to the leaky-mode loss.

Polarization coupling in single-mode single-polarization optical fibers: Power coupling

Optics Communications, 1990
Abstract A set of coupled power equations derived from that of amplitude equations for single-polarization (SMSP) optical fibers has been presented. Our results show that the power coupling coefficients are related not only to the effect of the birefringence of SMSP fibers, but also to the leaky mode loss.

Phase-matched polarization coupling in high-birefringence fibers through the optical Kerr effect

Optics Letters, 1992
We describe the use of the optical Kerr effect in a simple and novel way to write a transient polarization coupler in high-birefringence fiber. A conversion efficiency of as much as 0.4% is demonstrated, with a coupling bandwidth of approximately 0.4 nm. The method is fast and independent of any thermal drift.

Measurement of the Polarization Coupling Length in Telecom Fibers using Nonlinear Polarization Rotation

Optical Fiber Communication Conference and International Conference on Quantum Information, 2001
The polarization coupling length, an important parameter of the PMD probability distribution, is obtained from measurements and modeling of the nonlinear polarization rotation in optical fibers. Results for different types of fibers are presented.

Nonlinear polarization coupling and its application to high resolution distributed fiber sensing

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1993
A technique for time-resolved, high-resolution distributed pressure sensing utilizing nonlinearly induced birefringence and polarization coupling in optical fibers is proposed. A theory of cross-interaction between two counterpropagating waves which agrees well with numerical simulations is presented.

Noise and Bias Error Due to Polarization Coupling in a Fiber Optic Gyroscope

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2015
This paper reports a comprehensive model of the noise and drift induced by polarization coupling in a fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) interrogated with a laser of arbitrary linewidth. It includes the effects of dynamic phase biasing, a realistic description of the laser phase noise and polarization-dependent loss.

Force sensing based on distributed polarization coupling in polarization-maintaining fiber using finite element method

Optical Fiber Technology, 2020
Abstract Distributed polarization coupling detection can be used for force sensing of polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) is adopted to simulate the distributed polarization coupling force sensing of PMF. The initial thermal stress birefringence produced by the drawing process of PMF is simulated.
