Linear optics of polarization sheets
Applied Physics B Photophysics and Laser Chemistry, 1987We develop a theory in which thin films or monolayers of strongly polarizable molecules are described as linear polarization sheets. We show that this concept in combination with the transfer matrix method allows a transparent derivation of the transmission and reflection properties of a composite interface.

Polarized Optical-Flow Gyroscope
2020We merge by generalization two principles of passive optical sensing of motion. One is common spatially resolved imaging, where motion induces temporal readout changes at high-contrast spatial features, as used in traditional optical-flow. The other is the polarization compass, where axial rotation induces temporal readout changes due to the change of ...

Polarization optics of liquid-core optical fibers
Applied Optics, 1977Whereas straight liquid-core optical fibers have the capability of transporting linearly polarized light with any incident polarization angle, bent fibers exhibit form birefringence with the principal axes fixed to the plane of curvature. The effect of this curvature-dependent birefringence can be compensated by either periodically altering the plane of

Elasto-optic polarization measurement in optical fiber
Optics Letters, 1981A method is described for the nondestructive determination of the state of polarization of the guided light at an arbitrary point along a single-mode fiber. The fiber is squeezed laterally with a small, periodic (75-Hz) force. The azimuth of the force is varied.

Polarization recovery in optical polarization shift-keying systems
IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1997For the first time, a solution to the problem of recovering and tracking the signal constellation at the receiver side for binary and octonary digital optical transmission systems employing the modulation of polarization (POLSK) is proposed and analyzed.

Disorientated optical polarization devices
Optics Letters, 2011By using a pure operatorial (nonmatrix) approach to some of the variable composite polarization devices, we show that for some values of the variable internal parameters, these devices lose their anisotropy. Their principal axes, or more generally their eigenvectors, become undetermined, i.e., in this sense, the anisotropic devices get "disorientated."

Optical approach to concurrence and polarization
Optics Letters, 2018We address a recently established relationship, C2+P2=1, which engages concurrence (C) and polarization (P). This relationship has revealed a striking connection between two seemingly unrelated measures. Indeed, while C quantifies entanglement, which is widely seen as a quantum information resource, P quantifies the amount of coherence between optical ...

Polarization singularities in optical lattices
Optics Letters, 2004Polarization singularities are shown to be unavoidable features of three-dimensional optical lattices. These singularities take the form of lines of circular polarization, C lines, and lines of linear polarization, L lines. The polarization figures surrounding a C line (L line) rotate about the line with winding number +/-1/2 (+/-1).

Polarization-insensitive optical amplifiers in AlInGaAs
IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2001We report the theoretical modeling and the fabrication of polarization-insensitive optical amplifiers at 1300 nm in AlInGaAs-InP material system. Gain calculations, using the k.p method, show that the introduction of 0.33% tensile strain into a three-quantum-well structure can achieve gain-matching over a wide energy spectrum.

Observation of optical polarization Möbius strips
Science, 2015Light with twist and structure Möbius strips are three-dimensional structures consisting of a surface with just a single side. Readily demonstrated by snipping a paper ring, adding a twist, and then joining the ends of paper together again, these structures have intriguing mathematical properties in terms of topology and geometry.
