POLInSAR: From SIR-C to Tandem-X

2011 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2011
In this paper we provide a review of developments in the field of polarimetric SAR interferometry or POLInSAR, beginning with its origins in data from the SIR-C mission in 1994 and culminating in its latest application to Tandem-X, a space-borne single pass X-Band interferometer launched in 2010.

Modeling and Interpretation of the Multitemporal and Multibaseline Polinsar Coherence

IGARSS 2008 - 2008 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2008
This paper focuses on the physical understanding of the polarimetric interferometric SAR (PolInSAR) coherence, and on the accurate utilization of this coherence for vegetation parameter inversion. A polarimetric interferometric vegetation model presented here provides the possibility to estimate parameters related to ground topography, vegetation, and ...

Full maximum likelihood inversion of polinsar scattering models

IEEE International IEEE International IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2004. IGARSS '04. Proceedings. 2004, 2004
We expand upon the maximum likelihood inversion approach presented in Flynn, Tabb, and Carande ["Direct estimation of vegetation parameters from covariance data in polarimetric SAR interferometry", IGARSS 2002], and show how to optimally combine the polarimetric channels to form a bare earth estimate for the case of single layer ground scattering.

A coherent EM scattering model for dual baseline POLInSAR

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
In this paper we develop a new algorithm for improved tree height retrieval based on dual baseline polarimetric SAR interferometry. We test the algorithm using coherent simulations of forest canopy scattering.

Prediction of forest canopy structure from PolInSAR dataset

2017 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2017
This paper presents the overall strategy of fusion of full waveform LIDAR and L-band Polarimetric and Interferometric radar (PolInSAR) images of forests in order to predict the forest vertical profile where there is no LIDAR information. The images considered are the radar dataset collected by the Uninhabited Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR ...

Combination of PolInSAR and LiDAR Techniques for Forest Height Estimation

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2017
Forests are simplified as homogeneous volumes constituted of randomly uniform particles, characterized by a constant extinction coefficient in the random volume over ground (RVoG) model, which has been extensively applied to polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry for forest height estimation.

Relating Amazon forest biomass to PolInSAR extracted features

2013 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium - IGARSS, 2013
The combination of polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) with the interferometry capability (InSAR) enables the extraction of new features that enhances the development of biomass estimation models. This work aims in demonstrating the importance of the simultaneous use of several types of SAR features for estimating forest biomass. The study site is Sao Gabriel da

Model based PolSAR and PolInSAR speckle noise reduction

IGARSS 2003. 2003 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37477), 2004
Speckle noise is known as one of the main problems in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. For multidi- mensional SAR data, a novel speckle noise model has been proposed. This paper presents the use of this model to reduce the effects of speckle noise.

Model-based polarimetric decomposition using PolInSAR coherence

2011 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2011
A volume scattering model utilizing polarimetric SAR interferometry (PolInSAR) coherence is proposed. The new model is more adaptive and better fit for both forest and skew-oriented built-up areas. Thereby, a new model-based polarimetric decomposition scheme is developed. The advantage of the proposed method is demonstrated by E-SAR PolInSAR data.

A Self-Initializing PolInSAR Classifier Using Interferometric Phase Differences

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2007
This paper describes an unsupervised classifier for polarimetric interferometric synthetic aperture radar (PolInSAR) data. Expectation maximization is used to estimate class parameters that maximize the likelihood of observations in an input data set for a given number of classes.
