Sulphur‐induced polioencephalomalacia in lambs

An outbreak of polioencephalomalacia affected 16 of 46 Swaledale lambs and five of 25 Scottish blackface lambs 15 to 32 days after they were introduced to an ad libitum concentrate ration containing 0.43 per cent sulphur.

Polioencephalomalacia in dogs

Thirteen of the 15 cases of polioencephalomalacia reported in this article are considered to be idiopathic. These cases are compared with two cases of polioencephalomalacia following from cyanide poisoning and all are discussed in relation to similar entities occurring in dogs and in other species.

Sulphide-induced polioencephalomalacia in lambs

Polioencephalomalacia (PEM) was induced in four of 10 lambs by the administration of a sulphide solution into the oesophagus at 20 min intervals for a period of 40 to 120 min. Signs of neurological dysfunction occurred in all 10 lambs during that time and included stupor, visual impairment and seizures.

A 2‐month‐old mix‐breed calf developed acute blindness and ataxia. Serum thiamine concentration was deficient. In antemortem magnetic resonance imaging there were laminar T2‐hyperintense regions extending along the cerebral cortex that primarily affected the gray matter.

Experimental induction of ovine polioencephalomalacia

Polioencephalomalacia (PEM) was induced in sheep, with an overall incidence of 63 per cent, using local bracken fern (Pteridium esculentum) rhizomes as a source of thiaminase type 1 and pyridine as a basic cosubstrate. The condition was thiamin responsive and PEM was confirmed by histopathological examination.

POLIOENCEPHALOMALACIA OF SHEEP AND CATTLE

Polioencephalomalacia was confirmed histologically in Western Australia in sheep from 100 farms and cattle from 14 farms during the period 1965 to 1974. The condition affected sheep and cattle in good physical condition of all ages, throughout the year.

Polioencephalomalacia in Goats

SUMMARY Of six goats with polioencephalomalacia, three responded to thiamin therapy, whereas three died 2 to 7 days after onset of signs. The goats were 2 months to 2½ years old. They were affected during the winter or early spring, and concentrate feeding was a prominent part of the history.
