Photodynamic inactivation of poliovirus

Virology, 1963
Abstract Poliovirus, as usually found in fluids of infected cultures, cannot be inactivated photodynamically in the presence of heterotricyclic dyes. However, if the mature virus is freed of extraneous organic material, dyes can attach to the virus and render it light-sensitive.

Poliovirus Strikes Again, The

2014
Discovered in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, polio, or poliomyelitis, is a disease that causes inflammation of the gray matter of the spinal cord and also affects the digestive system. Spread by contact with other people, the three types of polioviruses are contracted through secretions of the nose and mouth and

Inactivated poliovirus vaccine and the final stages of poliovirus eradication

Vaccine, 2001
The use of the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) will increase before and probably also after the global eradication of the wild type poliovirus. Before eradication, the switch from the use of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) to IPV has been due to the better safety record of IPV. Introduction of IPV in the regular immunisation schedules is made easier

The Poliovirus Eradication Initiative [PDF]

open access: possible, 2010
Poliomyelitis is a neurological disease characterized by paralysis of the extremities and occasionally other muscles, leading to transient or permanent impairment, and rarely, in the most severe bulbar cases, death. Interest in poliomyelitis and poliovirus increased dramatically at the beginning of the 20th century because a relatively rare sporadic ...

The antigenic structure of poliovirus

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. B, Biological Sciences, 1989
We have solved the structure of the Mahoney strain of type 1 and the Sabin (attenuated vaccine) strain of type 3 poliovirus by X -ray crystallographic methods. By providing a three-dimensional framework for the interpretation of a wealth of experimental data, the structures have yielded insight into the architecture and assembly of the virus particle ...

Use of inactivated poliovirus vaccine for poliovirus outbreak response

The Lancet Infectious Diseases
With continued wild poliovirus transmission in Afghanistan and Pakistan and circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus in certain countries, there exists an ongoing risk of importation of polioviruses into other countries, including those that have been polio-free for decades.

Stabilization of poliovirus by cystine

Virology, 1958
Abstract Incubation of a heat-sensitive strain of (t + ) poliovirus with l -cystine produces a considerable enhancement of its thermal stability at temperatures below 50°. The effect is specific in that d -cystine and a number of other compounds are ineffective.

Poliovirus immunisation for travellers

Travel Medicine and Infectious Disease, 2004
Mass immunisation against poliomyelitis using principally oral live attenuated trivalent vaccine (OPV) has eradicated wild-type poliovirus transmission in the industrialised countries of the Western hemisphere and most other countries, and the global eradication of poliomyelitis is within reach.

Molecular Genetics of Poliovirus

Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1984
Poliovirus research has reached the point where molecular biologists and those interested in control of the disease can profitably come together. New molecular approaches offer the opportunity to make vaccines by previously inconceivable routes. These include synthesis of antigenic proteins in bacteria and chemical synthesis of antigenic peptides.

Current Poliovirus Vaccines

Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1984
Most of the poliovirus vaccine distributed in the United States since 1962 has been of the live, oral type ( OPV ). Production problems have not been a major concern for the manufacturer. The statistics compiled by various authorities since the product was introduced relative to paralytic disease following the administration of OPV are discussed and ...
