Unlocking a ‘lock–key’ mechanism governing pollen–pistil interactions

Trends in Plant Science
Pollen-pistil interactions ensure genetic diversity and shape the reproductive success of plants. Lan et al. recently revealed that the interaction among various receptor-like kinases, cell-wall proteins, and stigmatic RALF peptides (sRALFs) or pollen RALF peptides (pRALFs) on the stigma surface govern the penetration of pollen tubes in members of the ...

Pollen pistil interactions and interspecific incompatibility in Pennisetum

Euphytica, 1991
The causes of low crossability between Pennisetum species were studied. In the compatible cross P. typhoides x P. violaceum, the pollen tube growth was normal and there was good seed set. In P. typhoides x P. cenchroides, pollen tubes reached the ovary but no seed set was obtained indicating ovarian incompatibility. The stylar incompatibility was found

Pollen-pistil interaction in Linum grandiflorum

Planta, 1980
A detailed investigation of the receptive surface of the stigma of a dimorphic taxon, Linum grandiflorum, was carried out using scanning electron microscopy, cytochemistry and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The stigma surfaces of the pin and thrum morphs showed distinct differences.

Calreticulin expression and localization in plant cells during pollen–pistil interactions

Planta, 2009
In this report, the distributions of calreticulin (CRT) and its transcripts in Haemanthus pollen, pollen tubes, and somatic cells of the hollow pistil were studied. Immunoblot analysis of protein extracts from mature anthers, dry and germinated pollen, growing pollen tubes, and unpollinated/pollinated pistils revealed a strong expression of CRT.

The Plant Ovule Secretome: A Different View toward Pollen–Pistil Interactions

Journal of Proteome Research, 2015
During plant sexual reproduction, continuous exchange of signals between the pollen and the pistil (stigma, style, and ovary) plays important roles in pollen recognition and selection, establishing breeding barriers and, ultimately, leading to optimal seed set.

Recognition and rejection phenomena during pollen-pistil interaction

Proceedings / Indian Academy of Sciences, 1979
In flowering plants, the pollen grain—the male gametophyte—interacts with the diploid sporophytic tissue of the pistil before liberating the male gametes in the vicinity of the female gamete. During this gametophyte-sporophyte interaction the male gametes are effectively screened by the pistil ensuring the entry of only the appropriate pollen tubes ...

Transcriptome dynamics in the Arabidopsis male germline during pollen–pistil interactions

The Plant Journal
SUMMARYWhen pollen lands on a receptive stigma, it germinates and extends a tube inside the transmitting tissue of the pistil to deliver the sperm cells for double fertilization. The growth of the pollen tube triggers significant alterations in its gene expression.

Pollen-Pistil Interaction and Control of Fertilization

1982
Fertilization in flowering plants is a unique phenomenon and involves two fusion processes — syngamy between one of the male gametes and egg, and triple fusion between the other male gamete and fusion nucleus. Successful fertilization leads to fruit and seed development. The processes leading to fertilization are initiated on the stigma.

The emerging role of cysteine-rich peptides in pollen–pistil interactions

Journal of Experimental Botany
Abstract Unlike early land plants, flowering plants have evolved a pollen tube that transports a pair of non-motile sperm cells to the female gametophyte. This process, known as siphonogamy, was first observed in gymnosperms and later became prevalent in angiosperms.

Exploration bioinformatique des interactions pollen–pistil chez Solanum chacoense

2019
With 107 species distributed throughout Latin America, wild potatoes (Solanum sect. Petota) form an important germplasm reservoir for the breeding of their cultivated cousin (S. tuberosum). Yet, although they live in sympatry and have the physiological ability to hybridize with close relatives, those wild species exhibit strong reproductive isolation ...
