Pollen tube growth in macadamia

Abstract Pollen tube growth in macadamia was studied by fluorescence microscopy. The cultivars ‘Kakea’, ‘Keauhou’, ‘Hinde’ and ‘Renown’ showed some self-incompatibility, with pollen tube growth arrested in the style. Inhibited tubes had swollen tips and appeared to discharge their contents through a sub-terminal pore.

In higher plants, the sexual organs, e.g. anther and pistil, are separated spatially either within a flower in hermaphrodite plants or in different flowers as in monoecious plants. Successful fertilization requires temporally and spatially coordinated development of male and female organs and gametophytes.

The role of calcium in pollen tube tip growth is reviewed. Calcium ions are essential for growth, but are inhibitory at high concentrations (above c. 10-2 M). Germination of Lily Pollen: Respiration and Tube Growth

Germinating pollen of Lilium longiflorum (cv. Ace) briefly exhibited a high rate of respiration before pollen tubes began to grow. A second period of high respiration occurred while tubes were growing. Between these periods respiration proceeded at a lower rate.
