Pollen tube growth in macadamia
Scientia Horticulturae, 1983Abstract Pollen tube growth in macadamia was studied by fluorescence microscopy. The cultivars ‘Kakea’, ‘Keauhou’, ‘Hinde’ and ‘Renown’ showed some self-incompatibility, with pollen tube growth arrested in the style. Inhibited tubes had swollen tips and appeared to discharge their contents through a sub-terminal pore.

Nature, 1998Successful pollination and fertilization are absolute requirements for sexual reproduction in higher plants. Pollen hydration, germination and penetration of the stigma by pollen tubes are influenced by the exudate on wet stigmas and by the pollen coat in species with dry stigmas.

The Biological Bulletin, 1989The role of calcium in pollen tube tip growth is reviewed. Calcium ions are essential for growth, but are inhibitory at high concentrations (above c. 10-2 M). Germination of Lily Pollen: Respiration and Tube Growth
Science, 1965Germinating pollen of Lilium longiflorum (cv. Ace) briefly exhibited a high rate of respiration before pollen tubes began to grow. A second period of high respiration occurred while tubes were growing. Between these periods respiration proceeded at a lower rate.
