Elaborating the Motivations and Attitudes Driving Interest in Voluntary Biodiversity Credits

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Global biodiversity loss has prompted the search for new sources of conservation finance, such as voluntary biodiversity credits (VBCs). However, despite optimistic market projections, current uptake of VBCs is limited. Adopting an interpretive approach, we analyse 21 semistructured interviews with early market actors (buyers, sellers ...

Discovery of an Attorney’s Work Product in Subsequent Litigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
During the last century, the industrialization of agriculture has led to changes in the landscape and many important habitats have disappeared. Habitat loss and fragmentation and an increased use of agrichemicals have led to biodiversity declines in the ...

Ethnoecology of pollination and pollinators

open access: yesRevue d'ethnoécologie, 2015
This paper brings together three case studies on the interrelationships amongst people, pollination processes and pollinators (notably honeybees). In the palm groves of Saharan oases, the milieu and varieties of palm trees are created by horticulturalists, who fulfil themselves the role of pollinators.

PEK14: A Kinesin‐4 Necessary for Male‐Derived Fertility in Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Of the 61 kinesins annotated in Arabidopsis thaliana, many are still without assigned function. Here, we have screened an insertional mutant library of Arabidopsis pollen‐expressed kinesins for fertility defects. Insertional mutants for three kinesins showed a significant reduction in seed set.

Assessing the comparative risk of plant protection products to honey bees, non-target arthropods and non-Apis bees

open access: yesJulius-Kühn-Archiv, 2012
Background: In the European Union the placing of pesticides on the market requires as a prerequisite that a risk assessment demonstrates low risks to human health and the environment, among which includes pollinators.

Mapping the US Bridgebuilding Field: Situating Organizations in the Ecosystem of Social Change

open access: yesConflict Resolution Quarterly, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article explores the ecosystem of bridge‐building initiatives in the United States. Drawing on an original database of 223 organizations, interviews with 7 staff across 6 organizations, and a literature review related to bridge‐building, polarization, and collective action, we first describe the range of existing initiatives and their ...

The scaling of seed‐dispersal specialization in interaction networks across levels of organization

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Natural ecosystems are characterized by a specialization pattern where few species are common while many others are rare. In ecological networks involving biotic interactions, specialization operates as a continuum at individual, species, and community levels. Theory predicts that ecological and evolutionary factors can primarily explain specialization.

Pollinator conservation—the difference between managing for pollination services and preserving pollinator diversity

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Insect Science, 2015
Our review looks at pollinator conservation and highlights the differences in approach between managing for pollination services and preserving pollinator diversity. We argue that ecosystem service management does not equal biodiversity conservation, and that maintaining species diversity is crucial in providing ecosystem resilience in the face of ...
