Quantum Chemical Investigation of Polychlorinated Dibenzodioxins, Dibenzofurans and Biphenyls [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
All possible polychlorinated aromatic compounds in the classes of dibenzodioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and biphenyls (PCBs) were studied by quantum chemical methods of HF/6-311++G(d,p), B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and MP2/cc-pVTZ. Calculated stabilities and structures of these compounds were compared with available data on their abundance and toxicity.

Scalable and Integrated Photocatalytic Reactor Systems for Solar‐to‐Fuel Production: Photoredox and Photoreforming Processes

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 15, Issue 28, July 22, 2025.
Solar fuels and other value‐added chemicals derived from light‐driven reactions are highly desirable. Although advanced photoactive materials have been reported, demonstrations of their feasibility in large‐scale production are needed. Hence, strategies and recent efforts in scaling up photocatalytic reactors and integrating them into comprehensive ...

Rethinking Chlorine: Essential Chemical or Replaceable Risk?

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 18, Issue 13, July 1, 2025.
Chlorine is essential for the production of plastics and pharmaceuticals but poses significant safety and environmental risks. Herein, processes are presented that substitute chlorine or reduce its demand. Where indispensable, trichloride‐ and bichloride‐based ionic liquids could enhance safety and streamline the integration of renewable energy ...

Safety of frozen, dried and powder forms of house crickets (Acheta domesticus) as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 12, December 2024.
Abstract Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on the safety of frozen, dried and powder forms of house crickets (Acheta domesticus) as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The NF is proposed in three forms: (i) frozen, (ii)

Chemistry of Combustion-generated Nanoparticles and their Transformation in Particle Filters

open access: yesCHIMIA
Combustion-generated nanoparticles with diameters of 10-200 nm are ideal shuttles to transport compounds into the human body. The so-called Trojan Horse effect describes the translocation of persistent nanoparticles covered with adsorbates across the ...

Sources and Fate of Polychlorinated Dibenzodioxins, Dibenzofurans and Related Compounds in Human Environments [PDF]

open access: yesEnvironmental Health Perspectives, 1985
Several of the major incidents resulting in potential human exposures to polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and/or polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and related compounds which have occurred in the U.S. in recent periods have resulted from improper disposal of hazardous chemical wastes.

Biochar Production From Plastic‐Contaminated Biomass

open access: yesGCB Bioenergy, Volume 16, Issue 11, November 2024.
Anaerobic digestion and composting of biowastes recycle carbon and nutrients for agriculture, but plastic contamination introduces microplastics into ecosystems. Pyrolysis can eliminate plastics and creates carbon sinks with biochar. This study produced biochar from wood residues with 10% plastic at 450°C and 600°C, compared to controls of beech wood ...
