From Clinic to Computation: Multiscale Bioengineering Strategies for Durable Biological Aortic Valve Replacements

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioprosthetic aortic valves have revolutionized the treatment of aortic stenosis, but their durability is limited by structural valve deterioration (SVD). This review focuses on the pericardial tissue at the heart of these valves, examining how its mechanical properties and calcification drive fatigue and failure.

In Situ 3D Bioprinting: Impact of Cross‐Linking on the Adhesive Properties of Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In situ 3D bioprinting enables the direct deposition of cell‐laden, adhesive biomaterials for on‐site tissue regeneration. This review provides a comprehensive overview of how cross‐linking influences the bioadhesive properties of hydrogels used in 3D bioprinting, highlighting cross‐linking triggers, bioadhesion mechanisms, polymer interpenetration ...

Two phase aqueous extraction of whey proteins in a polyethylene glycol - arabinogalactan system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The whey protein separation potential of aqueous two-phase systems of arabinogalactan [AG] (Lonza FiberAidTM) and polyethylene glycol [PEG], buffered with 10 mmol/g phosphate or citrate buffer, was studied.

An examination of walking track analysis footprints of right-side unoperated limbs in rats prior to and following peripheral nerve injury and PEG fusion repair [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Peripheral nerve injury can result in long-lasting functional deficits in humans due to mammals’ limited axon regenerative capacity. PEG fusion is a defined technique that fuses injured axons, resulting in morphological and electrophysiological ...

Polymer Infiltration Into SURMOF Channels Enables Hydrophobic and Solid‐Like Slippery Functional Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report a polymer‐chain insertion strategy to fabricate pore‐threaded MOF thin films with precisely tuned surface chemistry and wettability. Grafting n‐alkane chains into the pillared layer Cu2(bdc)2(dabco) MOF thin film's vertical nanochannels enhances water stability, and induces hydrophobicity and lubricant‐free, solid‐like slippery behavior ...

Dynamic Bonds Enable Repair and Reprocessing of Glycol‐Modified PET

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Dynamic hindered urea bonds enable rapid healing in glycol‐modified PET‐based polyurethanes. Tuning the hindered‐amine content allows these polymers to balance mechanical integrity with fast repair, achieving complete scratch disappearance in 30 s at 130°C.

Assessment of antimicrobial activity of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) essential oil combined with EDTA and polyethylene glycol in yogurt

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Technology, 2015
Essential oils (EOs) are technological options that may be employed in natural foods due to their antimicrobial activities. However, restrictions exist when high EOs concentrations are required which, in their turn, affect sensory qualities ...

Structure of a Pheromone Receptor-Associated MHC Molecule with an Open and Empty Groove [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Neurons in the murine vomeronasal organ (VNO) express a family of class Ib major histocompatibility complex (MHC) proteins (M10s) that interact with the V2R class of VNO receptors.
