Effect of a polyhexamethylene biguanide mouthrinse on bacterial counts and plaque
Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 2001AbstractObjectives: For various clinical applications, polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) has been used for many years as an antiseptic in medicine. Little is known, however, of its antibacterial activity in the oral cavity and its ability to inhibit plaque formation.

Analysis of polyhexamethylene biguanide in multipurpose contact lens solutions☆
Talanta, 2009The objective of this study was to establish a reasonably simple and reliable method to measure very low concentrations of polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) in multipurpose contact lens solutions (MPSs). By using a weak cation exchange solid phase extraction cartridge to extract the PHMB from MPS, followed by HPLC analysis using an evaporative light ...

Cooperativity in the binding of the cationic biocide polyhexamethylene biguanide to nucleic acids
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2004The interaction between the broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), and various nucleic acids was investigated. Titration of either single- or double-stranded 100-bp DNA, or mixed-molecular weight marker DNA, or tRNA with PHMB caused precipitation of a complex between nucleic acid and PHMB in which the nucleotide ...

The biocide polyhexamethylene biguanide remains an uncommon contact allergen.
Contact Dermatitis, 2007Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) is used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products. Previous studies had shown a frequency of sensitization to PHMB of 0.5% and 0.4% in unselected dermatitis patients. The objective of this study was to determine the current frequency of sensitization to PHMB. From July 2005 until December 2005, a total

Treatment of Acanthamoeba Keratitis with Polyhexamethylene Biguanide
Ophthalmology, 1992Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) is a polymeric biguanide disinfectant that has not previously been used in the treatment of infection. Six patients with confirmed Acanthamoeba keratitis were treated with PHMB 0.02%. All patients had uncontrolled keratitis refractory to therapy with multiple conventional antiamebic agents.

Effect of polyhexamethylene biguanide on rat liver
Toxicology Letters, 2018Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), an amphiphilic polymeric biocide, increased liver tumor incidence in male and female rats at 1000 and 1500 mg/L in drinking water, but not at 500 mg/L in previous studies. In another study, PHMB administered in diet at 4000 mg/kg was negative for hepatocellular tumors.
