Polyhydramnios is a relatively common obstetrical complication. Major causes include maternal diabetes, chromosomal disorders, isoimmunologic disease, congenital abnormalities, multiple gestations, and idiopathic reasons. Perinatal morbidity and mortality is high and maternal complications are frequent.

The Significance of Recurrent Polyhydramnios
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 1993Summary: A study of 30 women who had polyhydramnios in more than 1 pregnancy revealed that 8 of the 36 resultant pregnancies (22.2%) were associated with diabetes mellitus, 14 (37.8%) with fetal macrosomia, and the perinatal mortality rate was 16.2% (6 of 37).

Treatment of Polyhydramnios with Indomethacin
Clinics in Perinatology, 1994Polyhydramnios detected in a pregnancy should always be investigated thoroughly. We believe chromosomal abnormalities should be excluded, but that determination need not delay therapy. Indomethacin has been shown to reduce amniotic fluid volume in certain cases, but a strict monitoring schedule should be followed whenever it is administered.

Animal model for polyhydramnios
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1989Chronic intravenous infusion of angiotensin 1 [182 micrograms/(kg.day)] into fetal lambs caused gross polyhydramnios. Infusions of comparable volumes of vehicle or lower concentrations of angiotensin 1 [48 micrograms/(kg.day)] did not cause gross polyhydramnios.
