Designed-in molecular interactions lead to superior thermo-mechanical properties in nanocomposites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The effect of the nanofiller chemistry on the mechanical behaviour of thermoset polymer matrix nanocomposites is investigated. The interaction between a crosslinked polymer resin and the reinforcing nanofibers driven by their chemistry is revealed by ...

Theoretical Analysis of the Performance of Glucose Sensors with Layer-by-Layer Assembled Outer Membranes

open access: yesSensors, 2012
The performance of implantable electrochemical glucose sensors is highly dependent on the flux-limiting (glucose, H2O2, O2) properties of their outer membranes. A careful understanding of the diffusion profiles of the participating species throughout the

Morphology and dynamics of dense nanometric precursor lms of polymer melts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
Nanometer-thick supported lms of polymer melts spontaneously form and spread around sessile droplets that are deposited on oxidized silicon wafers. At steady state, the lms become dense and adopt a uniform thickness which is equal to twice the gyration radius of the free polymer.

Affinity chromatography in dynamic combinatorial libraries: one-pot amplification and isolation of a strongly binding receptor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We report the one-pot amplification and isolation of a nanomolar receptor in a multibuilding block aqueous dynamic combinatorial library using a polymer-bound template.

Effect of van der Waals interaction strength and nanocluster size on the dynamical and mechanical properties of 1,4-cis-polybutadiene melts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the effect of embedding nanoclusters of radius 3-7 Å on the dynamical and mechanical properties of 1,4-cispolybutadiene melts. To see the effect of polymer-nanocluster interaction strength on the

A Statistical Theory of cosolvent-induced coil-globule transitions in dilute polymer solution [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics 141, 014902 (2014), 2014
We present a statistical model of a dilute polymer solution in good solvent in the presence of low-molecular weight cosolvent. We investigate the conformational changes of the polymer induced by a change of the cosolvent concentration and the type of interaction between the cosolvent and the polymer.

How Segmental Dynamics and Mesh Confinement Determine the Selective Diffusivity of Molecules in Crosslinked Dense Polymer Networks [PDF]

open access: yesACS Cent. Sci. 9 (2023) 508-518, 2023
The diffusion of molecules (penetrants) of variable size, shape, and chemistry through dense crosslinked polymer networks is a fundamental scientific problem that is broadly relevant in materials, polymer, physical and biological chemistry. Relevant applications include molecular separations in membranes, barrier materials for coatings, drug delivery ...

Electronic Properties of Vinylene-Linked Heterocyclic Conducting Polymers: Predictive Design and Rational Guidance from DFT Calculations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Physical Chemistry C, 115, 18333 (2011), 2011
The band structure and electronic properties in a series of vinylene-linked heterocyclic conducting polymers are investigated using density functional theory (DFT). In order to accurately calculate electronic band gaps, we utilize hybrid functionals with fully periodic boundary conditions to understand the effect of chemical functionalization on the ...

Comparing Zwitterionic and PEG Exteriors of Polyelectrolyte Complex Micelles

open access: yesMolecules, 2020
A series of model polyelectrolyte complex micelles (PCMs) was prepared to investigate the consequences of neutral and zwitterionic chemistries and distinct charged cores on the size and stability of nanocarriers.

Peptide-enhanced tough, resilient and adhesive eutectogels for highly reliable strain/pressure sensing under extreme conditions

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Biomimetic hydrogel materials show outstanding mechanical properties but water as solvent or carrier limits the possibility to apply these materials under extreme conditions. Here the authors report a peptide-enhanced eutectogel with excellent mechanical,
