Polymer-Tipped Optical Fibers

Fiber and Integrated Optics, 2008
Abstract This article presents a recent approach of polymer microtips integrated at the extremity of optical fibers by photopolymerization. The method is simple and flexible, and the obtained polymer/fiber hybrid system behaves as either a high quality microlens or a probe for near-field microscopy that requires strongly confined fields. Polymer-tipped

Polymer optical fiber amplifier

Applied Physics Letters, 1993
Polymer optical fiber amplifiers (POFA) of graded-index (GI) type, which have a gain in visible region, were successfully prepared by the interfacial-gel polymerization technique. The gain of 27 dB was observed at 591 nm signal wavelength with 690 W launched pump power at 532 nm in a GI POFA with 0.5 m length.

Polymer Optical Fiber Sensors

2017
In previous chapters, different optical sensing mechanisms have been discussed. The characteristics of the different types of OFSs have been presented and compared. Although different types and characteristics have been shown, all those sensing techniques were fabricated using silica optical fibers. In this chapter, an alternative line of optical fiber

Polymer Optical Fiber Couplers

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1992
<div class="htmlview paragraph">With increasing electronic function and sophistication in automobiles, optical fibers provide an attractive alternative to copper based media. Lower labor and component costs make polymer optical fibers (POF) preferable for this application to fibers based on silica.

Carbon nanotube-doped polymer optical fiber

Optics Letters, 2009
We present a method to fabricate graded-index multimode polymer optical fibers doped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Such fiber structures provide the means to fully utilize the exceptional optical properties of the CNTs. The core region of the fiber is composed of CNTs and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with the addition of diphenyl sulfide (DPS), which

Intensity-Encoded Polymer Optical Fiber Accelerometer

IEEE Sensors Journal, 2013
In this paper, we report the development and experimental implementation of a low-cost, compact, intensity-encoded accelerometer based on polymer optical fibers (POF). The proposed accelerometer sensor element relies on the misalignment between two POFs, being the external acceleration encoded in the optical signal intensity.

Fiber optic polymer cure sensor

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 1988
An in situ method is presented for monitoring the curing of polymeric compositions, including epoxy- and polymide-based composites. The sensor measures the difference between the refractive index of the cured and uncured composition, with the index increasing as polymerization proceeds.

Hollow-core microstructured polymer optical fiber

Optics Letters, 2006
We have fabricated microstructured polymer optical fibers that guide light in a hollow core using the photonic bandgap mechanism. The hollow core allows the use of polymer fibers to be extended to wavelength ranges where material absorption typically prohibits their use, with attenuation lower than the material loss observed in the infrared.

Polymer Optical Fibers and Nonlinear Optical Device Principles

Angewandte Chemie, 1989
AbstractBasic principles of the present optoelectronic research activities at Hoechst AG are presented in this contribution. Within the diversified broad band spectrum of optoelectronic materials and applications our interest is focused on new types of polymer optical fibers and nonlinear optical device principles using organic Langmuir–Blodgett films ...
