Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks): A New Pest of Mulberry

A tarsonemid mite Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks) has been found to attack on mulberry leaves in Nilgiris (MSL 5200 feet) Tamil Nadu, India. The mite attacked on abaxial surface of the tender and medium leaves. The mite completed its life cycle in 100 h on mulberry causing severe damage to mulberry leaves by sucking their sap.

The blattisociid mite Lasioseius floridensis Berlese was found associated with the broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), on gerbera leaves in Mogi das Cruzes, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Blattisociid mites are not common on aerial plant parts, except under high air humidity levels.

To make long-distance-shifts from one host plant patch to another, broad mites largely depend on phoretic association with whiteflies. However, the host plants of whiteflies and broad mites are not necessarily the same.
