Pool Boiling

2021
Pool boiling is boiling without any forced flow. A typical example is during heating of water in a pan placed over a stove. In pool boiling, any movement of liquid is by natural convection. It is therefore also known as natural convection boiling.

POOL BOILING IN REDUCED GRAVITY

Multiphase Science and Technology, 2001
The main outcomes of the worldwide experimental activity dealing with pool boiling in reduced gravity are summarized. The currently available experimental facilities and experimental opportunities are examined, the main results obtained by the various experimental teams are reviewed, and highlights of current and future applications of boiling in space

Boiling: Introduction And Pool Boiling

1990
Abstract Boiling can be divided into categories according to the mechanism occurring, and according to the geometric situation. The three mechanisms of boiling are: (a) nucleate boiling, where vapour bubbles are formed (usually at a solid surface); (b) convective boiling, where the heat is conducted through a thin film of ...

Pool boiling — And the effect of pool geometry

Wärme- und Stoffübertragung, 1983
Simple correlationsh=C·qn for experimental results in nucleate pool boiling often exhibit a wide scatter in the constant and the exponent. Among the many parameters responsible, an effect from confining boundaries causing flow recirculation, cannot be excluded.

Microscales of saturated pool film boiling

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2003
Abstract Two thermal Kolmogorov scales for pool film boiling η θ B ∼ να 2 2 B 1/4 , η θ C ∼ α 2 3 B 1/4 , are introduced. Here ν, k and ρ respectively denote the vapor kinematic viscosity, thermal conductivity and density, α2=k/ρcp2 and cp2=hfg/ΔT (a two-phase thermal ...

A new microstructure for pool boiling

Superlattices and Microstructures, 2004
Abstract Combining electrocoating and etching processes, we have developed a new type of microstructure for nucleate boiling. The basic elements of the structure are cylindrically shaped; their density ranges up to 107 cm−2. To test the efficiency of the structure, the outer surface of a tube has been provided with such a structure and used in pool ...

Enhancement of pool boiling

International Journal of Refrigeration, 1997
Abstract This review considers the many techniques that have been developed to enhance boiling heat transfer. After introducing the techniques, the applications to pool boiling are described. Comments are offered regarding commercial introduction of this technology and the generations of heat transfer technology; advanced enhancement represents 3rd ...

Surface effects in pool boiling

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 1985
Abstract Surface effects in boiling heat transfer have been studied with particular emphasis on the role of surface roughness (measured by CLA) and surface energy (measured by contact angle). The experiments for the most part use a simple quenching technique with metal cylinders (aluminium or copper) immersed in saturated water or methanol.

The microlayer in nucleate pool boiling

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 1969
Abstract Experiments are reported in which organic liquids underwent pool boiling at low pressure, forming large vapour bubbles on the surface of a heater plate consisting of glass or ceramic. The temperature at the surface of the heater was measured, leading to support for the hypothesis that a thin layer of liquid (the microlayer) forms beneath the
