Frequency of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Serum Samples of Electronics Workers in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt

open access: yesEgyptian Society of Clinical Toxicology Journal, 2023
Background: Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemicals that persist in the environment, bioaccumulate in living organisms and pose a threat to human health and the environment.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Partitioning of Persistent Organic Pollutants between Adipose Tissue and Serum in Human Studies

open access: yesToxics, 2022
Blood is the most widely used matrix for biomonitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). It is assumed that POPs are homogenously distributed within body lipids at steady state; however, the variability underlying the partitioning of POPs between ...

POPS 2.0 Use Cases 1-10 v1.0 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This document defines the Use Cases that will be implemented in the POPS 2.0 system. These Use Cases describe the major functions and activities of the XSEDE allocations process. These activities include: 1) Establish an Allocations Process; 2) Establish

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

2, 2′, 4, 4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether induces thyroid toxicity by targeting BRAF-mediated MEK-ERK-NIS pathway in human thyroid follicular epithelial cells

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
2, 2’, 4, 4’-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47), one of the most abundant and toxic congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), has been implicated in thyroid disorders, but its thyroid toxicity in human thyroid cells and underlying mechanisms ...

Legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants in the freshwater system: Relative distribution, contamination trends, and bioaccumulation

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2020
In this study, a comprehensive investigation was performed to understand the overall occurrence, relative distribution, and bioaccumulation of seven different groups of POPs, comprising 27 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 76 polychlorinated ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Assessment of persistent organic pollutants and their relationship with immunoglobulins in blood of penguin colonies from Antarctica

open access: yesAustral Journal of Veterinary Sciences, 2018
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may affect the immune system of seabirds, and some field studies have examined this effect. There are evidences that POPs cause negative effects on the immune system, but in Antarctic penguins data are scarce.
