A Parallel Method for Population Balance Equations Based on the Method of Characteristics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, we present a parallel scheme to solve the population balance equations based on the method of characteristics and the finite element discretization.

Mutation–selection balance in mixed mating populations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Theoretical Biology, 2007
An approximation to the average number of deleterious mutations per gamete, Q, is derived from a model allowing selection on both zygotes and male gametes. Progeny are produced by either outcrossing or self-fertilization with fixed probabilities. The genetic model is a standard in evolutionary biology: mutations occur at unlinked loci, have equivalent ...

Investigating the interactions between physical and biological heterogeneities in bioreactors using compartment, population balance and metabolic models

open access: yes, 2015
A generic model for the description of biological population dynamics in industrial bioreactors is detailed. Hydrodynamics, mass transfer between the cell and the surrounding fluid, population heterogeneity, metabolism and biological adaptation have to ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Mathematical Modeling of Multi-Phenomena Anisotropic Systems: Ejection of Primary Aerosols during the Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass

open access: yesMathematics
This study introduces a novel particle model for biomass fast pyrolysis, incorporating an anisotropic cylindrical particle to address mass and energy transport coupled with aerosol ejection, which previous models have overlooked.

CFD Simulation of Nanosufur Crystallization Incorporating Population Balance Modeling [PDF]

open access: yesIranica Journal of Energy and Environment, 2013
A physical vapor condensation process for synthesizing nanosized sulfur powder as a precursor for various industries was simulated by the use of computational ?uid dynamic (CFD) modeling. The phase change, swirl flow and heat transfer taking place inside

Foray search: An effective systematic dispersal strategy in fragmented landscapes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In the absence of evidence to the contrary, population models generally assume that the dispersal trajectories of animals are random, but systematic dispersal could be more efficient at detecting new habitat and may therefore constitute a more realistic ...

Linking neurogenesis, oligodendrogenesis, and myelination defects to neurodevelopmental disruption in primary mitochondrial disorders

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial remodeling shapes neural and glial lineage progression by matching metabolic supply with demand. Elevated OXPHOS supports differentiation and myelin formation, while myelin compaction lowers mitochondrial dependence, revealing mitochondria as key drivers of developmental energy adaptation.

Mutation, selection, and ancestry in branching models: a variational approach

open access: yes, 2006
We consider the evolution of populations under the joint action of mutation and differential reproduction, or selection. The population is modelled as a finite-type Markov branching process in continuous time, and the associated genealogical tree is ...
