The accumulation of myeloid‐derived suppressor cells participates in abdominal infection‐induced tumor progression through the PD‐L1/PD‐1 axis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study explores how sepsis affects GC progression by creating an immunosuppressive environment. Our findings reveal that sepsis promotes immune dysregulation, enhancing tumor growth and metastasis. Targeting the PD‐1/PD‐L1 pathway with monoclonal antibodies shows potential for restoring immune function and improving outcomes in cancer patients ...

Understanding Past Population Dynamics: Bayesian Coalescent-Based Modeling with Covariates [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Effective population size characterizes the genetic variability in a population and is a parameter of paramount importance in population genetics. Kingman's coalescent process enables inference of past population dynamics directly from molecular sequence data, and researchers have developed a number of flexible coalescent-based models for Bayesian ...

Addressing persistent challenges in digital image analysis of cancer tissue: resources developed from a hackathon

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Large multidimensional digital images of cancer tissue are becoming prolific, but many challenges exist to automatically extract relevant information from them using computational tools. We describe publicly available resources that have been developed jointly by expert and non‐expert computational biologists working together during a virtual hackathon

MicroRNAs in seminal plasma are able to discern infertile men at increased risk of developing testicular cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Male infertility is a known risk factor for the development of testicular cancer. In this paper, we analyzed the expression profile of a microRNA panel by real‐time PCR and validated the results by digital PCR. Experimental and bioinformatics analyses allowed us to identify possible biomarkers able to discern men with a higher risk of developing ...

Prevalence and factors associated with intention to use contraceptives among women of reproductive age: a multilevel analysis of the 2018 Guinea demographic and health survey

open access: yesBMC Pregnancy and Childbirth
Background Contraceptive use is a key indicator of improving the health and well-being of women, mothers and their families, preventing unwanted pregnancies, and reducing maternal and child mortalities. Despite a lot of investments from the Government of

Dynamics of a Reaction-Diffusion Benthic-Drift Model with Strong Allee Effect Growth [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
The dynamics of a reaction-diffusion-advection benthic-drift population model that links changes in the flow regime and habitat availability with population dynamics is studied. In the model, the stream is divided into drift zone and benthic zone, and the population is divided into two interacting compartments, individuals residing in the benthic zone ...

Detection rate for ESR1 mutations is higher in circulating‐tumor‐cell‐derived genomic DNA than in paired plasma cell‐free DNA samples as revealed by ddPCR

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Analysis of ESR1 mutations in plasma cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) is highly important for the selection of treatment in patients with breast cancer. Using multiplex‐ddPCR and identical blood draws, we investigated whether circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and cfDNA provide similar or complementary information for ESR1 mutations.

Short, stringent lockdowns halted SARS-CoV-2 transmissions in Danish municipalities

open access: yesScientific Reports
In late 2020, the focus of the global effort against the COVID-19 pandemic centered around the development of a vaccine, when reports of a mutated SARS-CoV-2 virus variant in a population of 17 million farmed mink came from Denmark, threatening to ...

Analysis of Population Dynamics of Terrorist Cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Applied mathematics connects many different fields of science. This research focuses on the population dynamics of terrorist organizations, namely Al Qaeda, by creating a mathematical model, while still considering social science fields, such as ...

Multi‐omics profiling reveals key factors involved in Ewing sarcoma metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model that recapitulates the spread of tumor cells within the body, we have profiled paired tumors and metastasis samples using a multiomics approach combining different layers of biological information. We identified key genes that drive metastasis in Ewing sarcoma.
