Preoperative Portal Vein Embolization
2007Curative treatment of hilar cholangiocarcinoma leads to a major reduction of hepatic function due to the need for extended hepatectomy with biliary tract resection; therefore, it is exposed to the risk of postoperative hepatic failure [1,2]. Makuuchi [3] can take the credit, for introducing preoperative embolic occlusion of portal branches (PVE) in ...

Sonographic diagnosis of gas embolism in the portal vein
Gastrointestinal Radiology, 1982A case of gas embolism in the portal vein detected by ultrasound is presented. Gas bubbles were characterized by strong reflections in the lumen of the portal vein, moving into the liver. Because they were trapped in the liver parenchyma, the gas bubbles caused strongly echogenic areas, sometimes with acoustic shadows.

Transileocolic Portal Vein Embolization
2011Transileocolic portal vein embolization (TIPE) is invasive compared to percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization (PTPE) because the procedure requires general anesthesia. There are, however, several advantages: First, it enables the examination of extrahepatic diseases; second, catheter manipulation is easier compared to ipsilateral PTPE ...

Indications for portal vein embolization in perihilar cholangiocarcinoma
Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences, 2014Abstract Preoperative portal vein embolization (PVE) is often performed as a routine procedure before extended hepatectomy to minimize postoperative liver failure. However, the indications for PVE in perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (PCCA), which differ between institutions, remain controversial. In the present study, we examined the indications for PVE in

Portal vein embolization in extended liver resection
Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery, 2017Liver resection of benign, primary, and metastatic tumors is challenging and places patients at risk of postoperative liver insufficiency. This risk is largely dependent on the volume and function of the future liver remnant (FLR). It is, therefore, critical that hepatobiliary surgeons are well versed in the measurement of liver volume and function, as

Complications of Portal Vein Embolization
2011Portal vein embolization (PVE) may be viewed as a tool used to improve the morbidity and mortality following major hepatectomy. While it is considered relatively safe, PVE is a complex procedure with potential complications. Adverse events may relate to the access approach or to the embolization procedure itself.

Embolic Materials Used for Portal Vein Embolization
2011The gamut of embolic materials has been used for portal venous embolization. Local preferences appear to dictate the choice of embolic material, as there are no clear data supporting a superior choice among absolute ethanol, cyanoacrylate, fibrin glue, and small particle embolization with or without coils – the techniques accounting for the majority of

Portal Vein Embolization: Efficacy, Methodology, and Alternatives
Techniques in Vascular and Interventional RadiologyPortal vein embolization (PVE) is a minimally invasive intervention that has become the standard of care in preoperative liver augmentation for patients undergoing extended hepatic resections for primary and secondary liver cancers. PVE provides permanent and complete occlusion of the portal venous inflow to diseased hepatic segments, re-directing ...
