Negative Optical Torque

open access: yes, 2014
Maxwell noted that light carries angular momentum, and as such it can exert torques on material objects. This was subsequently proved by Beth in 1936.

Insights Into the Antigenic Repertoire of Unclassified Synaptic Antibodies

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective We sought to characterize the sixth most common finding in our neuroimmunological laboratory practice (tissue assay‐observed unclassified neural antibodies [UNAs]), combining protein microarray and phage immunoprecipitation sequencing (PhIP‐Seq). Methods Patient specimens (258; 133 serums; 125 CSF) meeting UNA criteria were profiled;

Magnetic angular position sensor enabled by spin-orbit torque [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Physics Letters, 2018
We propose a simple scheme for magnetic angular position sensor based on current-induced spin-orbit torque effect. A full range detection of 360° is realized with a pair of Hall crosses made of heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures. The current axes of the two Hall crosses are aligned orthogonal to each other, such that when both devices are subject

MHD simulations of accretion onto a dipolar magnetosphere. II. Magnetospheric ejections and stellar spin-down [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This paper examines the outflows associated with the interaction of a stellar magnetosphere with an accretion disk. In particular, we investigate the magnetospheric ejections (MEs) due to the expansion and reconnection of the field lines connecting the ...

Current Tracking Adaptive Control of Brushless DC Motors

open access: yesInternational Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing, EarlyView.
In this paper, the current tracking for Brushless Direct Current motors is approached considering uncertainty in the parameters of the motor's model. An adaptive control scheme to compensate electrical parameters uncertainty is proposed without requiring any knowledge of the mechanical parameters.

Robotic trajectory tracking: Bio-inspired position and torque control

open access: yesProcedia CIRP, 2020
Abstract As far as complex contact-based manufacturing tasks are concerned, humans outperform machines. Indeed, conventionally controlled robotic manipulators are limited to basic applications in close to ideal circumstances. However, tedious work in hazardous environments, make some tasks unsuitable for humans.

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

Small hydraulic turbine drives [PDF]

open access: yes, 1970
Turbine, driven by the fluid being pumped, requires no external controls, is completely integrated into the flow system, and has bearings which utilize the main fluid for lubrication and cooling. Torque capabilities compare favorably with those developed

Proton transport and torque generation in rotary biomotors

open access: yes, 2008
We analyze the dynamics of rotary biomotors within a simple nano-electromechanical model, consisting of a stator part and a ring-shaped rotor having twelve proton-binding sites.

The steady oblique path of buoyancy-driven disks and spheres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We consider the steady motion of disks of various thicknesses in a weakly viscous flow, in the case where the angle of incidence $\alpha$ (defined as that between the disk axis and its velocity) is small.
