Is postoperative residual curarization still a problem?

Seminars in Anesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain, 2002
ORE THAN 20 years ago, it was docu. mented that postoperative residual curarization (PORC) was frequent in patients given longacting neuromuscular blocking agents. 1 Later studies from many different parts of the world confirmed these findings but also showed that the incidence was significantly less when intermediate-acting neuromuscular blocking ...

The Occurrence of Postoperative Residual Curarization among Post-Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients in a Surgical Intensive Care Unit of a Tertiary Hospital

Philippine Journal of Cardiology, 2021
BACKGROUND: Intermediate-acting muscle relaxants have gained favor in fast-track cardiac  anesthesia since these are associated with early extubation. However, postoperative residual  curarization (PORC) still occur in the post anesthesia care unit.

Postoperative Residual Curarization: A Case Report

Anesthesia eJournal, 2016
An elderly frail male with a history of liver disease presented for a laparoscopic ablation of a liver mass. Nondepolarizing neuromuscular blockade agents were utilized to maintain a train-of-four count of 1 to 2 twitches throughout the surgery. At the conclusion of the operation the patient’s neuromuscular blockade was assessed via train-of-four at ...

Evaluation of postoperative residual curarization: a prospective clinical study

Journal of Medical Topics and Updates
Background: Reversal of neuroblockade in general anesthesia is important to prevent possible complications. Currently, neostigmine and sugamedex are the agents of choice. The reversibility of blockade is evaluated by TOF (train-of-four ) as well as clinical observation.

Postoperative residual curarization: clinical observation in the post-anesthesia care unit.

Chang Gung medical journal, 2008
Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are widely used during the induction and maintenance of anesthesia. Postoperative residual curarization (PORC) following the use of NMBAs still occurs even though intermediate-acting NMBAs were used. Train-of-four (TOF) stimulation is used to quantify the degree of neuromuscular blockade.

[The incidence of postoperative residual curarization in the recovery room after rocuronium administration].

Rozhledy v chirurgii : mesicnik Ceskoslovenske chirurgicke spolecnosti, 2007
In 513 patients, we investigated residual curarization after general anaesthesia with rocuronium administered, without peroperative neuromuscular blockade monitoring. On admission to the recovery room, the ulnar nerve was stimulated submaximally (30 mA) and the evoked muscle response was quantified with accelerometry (TOF-Watch SX, Organon).

The incidence of postoperative residual curarization following the use of intermediate-acting muscle relaxants and related factors.

Middle East journal of anaesthesiology, 2015
To evaluate the incidence of residual curarization (RC) and related risk factors in the early and late postoperative periods in patients receiving general anesthesia with intermediate-acting muscle relaxants.Two-hundred and eight American Society of Anesthesiologists class I and II patients, aged 18-70 years, who underwent general anesthesia with ...

[Does evidence lead to a change in clinical practice? Danish anaesthetists' and nurse anesthetists' clinical practice and knowledge of postoperative residual curarization].

Ugeskrift for laeger, 2005
Recent studies have shown a high incidence of postoperative residual curarization (PORC). The reason for this is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the methods used by Danish anaesthetists to exclude PORC are evidence-based and, if they are not, to determine the reasons why.251 anaesthetists (nurses and physicians) from eight ...
