Quantum analysis of postsynaptic potentials
Neurophysiology, 1979Basic formulations of the quantum theory for synaptic transmission are listed. Methods for determining the mean quantum content, quantum value and binomial parameters describing the amplitude distributions of the unitary and "minimal" postsynaptic potentials are discussed.

Vestibular-evoked postsynaptic potentials in Deiters neurones
Experimental Brain Research, 1969Stimulation of the vestibular nerve induced EPSPs monosynaptically in 29% of cat's Deiters neurones sampled on the ipsilateral side. These EPSPs started with latencies of 0.6–1.0 msec, rose sharply with a summit time of 0.5 msec and decayed exponentially with a time constant of 0.9–1.7 msec. Then amplitudes were graded finely according to the intensity

Ion channels and postsynaptic potentials
Biophysical Chemistry, 1988Neurotransmitters open transmembrane ion channels in target membranes. At the motor endplate, the open time of channels activated by acetylcholine determines the time course of the endplate current. Endplate channels are selective for cations and their conductance and open times are influenced by the nature of the permeating cation.

Primary afferent hyperpolarization without postsynaptic potentiation
Experimental Neurology, 1973Abstract Tetanization of a cutaneous afferent pathway does not lead to potentiation of postsynaptic activity but it produces a decrease in excitability of the pathway's central terminals and an increase in the threshold of the dorsal root reflexes evoked in the same fibers by stimulation of adjacent pathways.

Prolongation of hippocampal inhibitory postsynaptic potentials by barbiturates
Nature, 1975IT is well documented that barbiturates dramatically prolong presynaptic inhibition1–4. Their effect on postsynaptic inhibition is less clear, although the available evidence suggests that a similar enhancement may occur at some sites5–7. Since the inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (i.p.s.p.s) in hippocampal neurones are unusually large and the ...

Postsynaptic Membrane Fusion and Long-Term Potentiation
Science, 1998The possibility that membrane fusion events in the postsynaptic cell may be required for the change in synaptic strength resulting from long-term potentiation (LTP) was examined. Introducing substances into the postsynaptic cell that block membrane fusion at a number of different steps reduced LTP.

Postsynaptic Mechanisms Involved in Long-Term Potentiation
1990Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a persistent enhancement of synaptic transmission observed at excitatory synapses in the mammalian hippocampus (Bliss and Lomo, 1973). This phenomenon is one of the most striking examples of synaptic plasticity in the vertebrate brain, and has been intensively studied as a model for learning and memory.

Postsynaptic potentials of bulbar respiratory neurons of the turtle
Respiration Physiology, 1986Membrane potentials of bulbar respiratory neurons of Pseudemys scripta were recorded from unanesthetized, decerebrate animals. Efferent neurograms were recorded from the serratus magnus (inspiratory) and pectoralis (expiratory) nerves. The animals were paralyzed and ventilated by a servo-respirator driven by the pectoralis neurogram to mimic the ...

Stretch-evoked excitatory postsynaptic potentials in motoneurons
Brain Research, 1971Abstract The profile of excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP) produced on triceps surae motoneurons by 5 msec duration triangular wave stretch of de-efferented medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus (S) muscles was observed on anesthetized, spinalized cats.

Intracellular Postsynaptic Potentials in the Somatosensory Cortex of the Cat
Nature, 1965CELLULAR activity in the somatosensory cerebral cortex has been investigated in detail with extracellular recording. Excitatory phenomena have dominated the findings in these experiments although inhibitory actions, mostly as ‘surround inhibition’, have been reported1–3.
