Priority quality traits for gendered sweetpotato breeding in Mozambique

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2023
IntroductionSweetpotato breeders strive to develop varieties that address productivity challenges farmers face in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, adoption of these varieties is low, partly attributed to limited attention to attributes desired by the ...

Nutrition—sensitive agricultural interventions and maternal and child nutrition outcomes in arid and semi—arid lands of Kenya

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
BackgroundIn regions facing chronic stress such as the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) of Kenya, there is poor quality of diet among women and children in humanitarian situations, mainly due to multiple climatic shocks that exacerbate local food systems.

A First approach of using ultrasound as an alternative for blanching in vacuum-packaged potato strips [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The effect of ultrasound (US) (40 kHz, 200 W, 3 min), blanching (85 °C, 3.5 min), and the combination of both methods was evaluated on the quality of vacuum-packaged potato strips stored at 3 ± 1 °C for up to 10 days.

Assessing the microstructural and rheological changes induced by food additives on potato puree [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The effects of agar, alginate, lecithin and glycerol on the rheological properties of commercial potato puree were investigated and interpreted in terms of starch microstructural changes, and the applicability of the Cox-Merz rule was evaluated.

Impact of climate change on the potato crop and biodiversity in its center of origin

open access: yesOpen Agriculture, 2018
The Andean region is the most important center of potato diversity in the world. The global warming trend which has taken place since the 1950s, that is 2-3 times the reported global warming and the continuous presence of extreme events makes this region

Advances in innovative seed potato production systems in India

open access: yesFrontiers in Agronomy, 2022
India is the second largest producer of potatoes in the world. Seed is the single most important input in potato cultivation. High seed rate (2.5–3.0 tons/ha), low rate of multiplication, progressive viral degeneration, storage, and transportation are ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Germplasm, Breeding, and Genomics in Potato Improvement of Biotic and Abiotic Stresses Tolerance

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2022
Potato is one of the most important food crops in the world. Late blight, viruses, soil and tuber-borne diseases, insect-pests mainly aphids, whiteflies, and potato tuber moths are the major biotic stresses affecting potato production.
