Resultant reactive power of overhead lines

Proceedings of the IEE Part C: Monographs, 1956
A method is demonstrated for arriving at simple formulae by which the resultant reactive power of overhead lines under any load condition can be quickly calculated, and in which the only line constant necessary to be known is the inductance. Tables of practical overhead-line inductances are given.

Energy harvesting for overhead power line monitoring

International Multi-Conference on Systems, Sygnals & Devices, 2012
Power transmission is becoming increasingly challenging because of the growth of electricity demands and distribution of renewable energies. Therefore, an effective monitoring of power lines is of decisive importance for network management. In this paper, we propose a solution for energy harvesting from the electrostatic stray field of the power line ...

Roman engineering [overhead power line history]

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2003
A modern engineer visiting Rome, as the author did recently, cannot fail to be impressed by the work of the Roman engineers of 2000 years ago. However much manual labor was available in the capital of the empire, the planning and construction of the Colosseum and the Pantheon were magnificent engineering achievements.

Overhead Power Line with Backup Split-Phase

2019 International Multi-Conference on Industrial Engineering and Modern Technologies (FarEastCon), 2019
The article describes the characteristics of traditional and unconventional types of AC power transmission, such as overhead lines with a backup phase, six-phase power lines and controlled power lines FACTS. The analysis of ways to improve the efficiency and operation of overhead power lines using backup phases is given.

Overhead power line design in market conditions

2015 IEEE 5th International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives (POWERENG), 2015
This paper deals with the concept of the stochastic optimization methodology for power line designing, which allows optimizing transmission network planning. The paper presents a comparison of both methods applied for selecting the best line design alternative — the deterministic economic intervals method and the stochastic approach based method ...

Sensing Overhead Power Lines for Accident Prevention

Transactions of the ASAE, 1994
Accidental contacts between farm equipment and overhead power lines contribute to the poor safety record of agriculture. Contact is commonly with an auger or irrigation pipe being moved by hand or with a tall piece of equipment being towed by a vehicle.

Aerial video inspection of overhead power lines

Power Engineering Journal, 2001
Electricity companies routinely inspect their overhead lines by helicopter. The work described here aims to enhance the inspection process by using video surveillance techniques to capture and store visual information for easy retrieval as a basis for maintenance planning.

Vibration damper for overhead power lines

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2006
This invention relates to the design and manufacture of Stockbridge type vibration dampers for overhead power transmission lines. The invention provides a Stockbridge vibration damper comprising a pair of damping weights joined by a stranded steel cable, a clamp attached to the cable at a location intermediate the weights for attachment to an overhead ...

Risk management of overhead electric power lines

2018 1st International Conference on Power, Energy and Smart Grid (ICPESG), 2018
A Right-of-Way (ROW) is a piece of land over which electric power lines are stationed irrespective of AC and DC Transmission systems. Vegetation (dense forests) within the right of way poses the most serious threat to power lines structures. Atmospheric snow is also considered as one of the hazards but it has reduced threat.

Limiting electric fields of HVDC overhead power lines

Radiation and Environmental Biophysics, 2014
As a consequence of the increased use of renewable energy and the now long distances between energy generation and consumption, in Europe, electric power transfer by high-voltage (HV) direct current (DC) overhead power lines gains increasing importance. Thousands of kilometers of them are going to be built within the next years.
