Introduction to Power Transformer Protection

2020
India is a leading country and its economy grows day by day by attracting foreign direct investments (FDI). Production, manufacturing, industrial, software, and all other business depends on reliable electricity supply with a slogan of “without power-no business”, shows the importance of reliable power supply.

An empirical fourier transform based power transformer differential protection

2017 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2017
This paper presents a novel approach for the power transformer differential protection based on empirical Fourier transform (EFT). The EFT is a novel transform technique, which is derived from discrete Fourier transform (DFT) with certain modifications based on the nature of current waveforms during internal fault, inrush and current transformer (CT ...

Walsh transform based digital protection of power transformer

ACE '90. Proceedings of [XVI Annual Convention and Exhibition of the IEEE In India], 2005
The problem of protection of power transformers against abnormal conditions such as faults etc. has been of great concern to the protection engineers. Traditionally, percentage differential relaying scheme has been used to protect the transformer against internal faults, even though this relaying scheme may mal operate due to various reasons such as ...

Differential Protection Enhancement for Power Transformer

2021
A power transformer is protected against internal faults using a differential protection which is sensitive and a fast. However, during transformer magnetization (inrush current or over-excitation), the differential relay may operate unnecessarily.

Neutralizing transformer to protect power station communication

Electrical Engineering, 1936
In considering the subject of protecting communication circuits at electric power plants and substations by means of neutralizing transformers, this paper gives particular attention to the problems incident to the localized rise in ground potential caused by power system faults. Several specific installations are discussed and illustrated.

Intelligent protection scheme for power transformer

2017 North American Power Symposium (NAPS), 2017
This paper presents the development of a small-scale model of a single-phase transformer differential protection scheme in a laboratory environment. The developed model is realistic in nature as it closely resembles various phenomena that occur in an actual transformer.

Relay Protection of Power Transformers

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1947
This report of the AIEE relay subcommittee presents the results of a 3-year investigation of present and preferred practices in the relay protection of power transformers. Consideration is given to the influence of advances in the protective art and progress in the design of and methods of operating power transformers. A survey covering experience with

Transformer differential protection using calculated power

2011 International Conference on Advanced Power System Automation and Protection, 2011
A new differential protection principle for transformer is proposed utilizing calculated power in this paper. It is able to discriminate between inrush and internal fault of transformers with large capacity and extra high voltage, preventing the maloperation due to magnetizing inrush. The calculated power is derived based on two-port network equivalent.

Integrated digital power transformer protection

IEE Proceedings - Generation, Transmission and Distribution, 1994
In the paper the hardware and software prototype realisation of the integrated digital three-phase power transformer protection for selective operation with all kinds of short circuits, ground faults and turn-to-turn faults is presented. The proposed integrated protection concept was developed on the basis of a nonlinear mathematical transformer model ...

The surge protection of power transformers

Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, 1939
The paper commences by reviewing the methods adopted for the protection of overhead lines and transformers from the incidence of lightning. Itis then pointed out that in manycases it is not economic, and in others technically difficult, to provide sufficient line protection, so that transformers connected to such lines are likely to be subjected to ...
