Piscine (Sparus aurata) transthyretin cDNA cloning and characterization [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
Transthyretin (TTR) is one of the three plasma proteins that participate in the transport of thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3); it is also involved in the carriage of retinol through the mediation of retinol-binding protein.1 ...

Role of albumin and prealbumin in assessing nutritional status and predicting increased risk of infectious complications during childhood cancer treatment

open access: yesActa Biochimica Polonica
Introduction Proper nutrition in patients with cancer is important for preventing treatment complications and achieving remission. Malnutrition in these patients leads to reduced production of essential structural proteins.

Placental transfer of a hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyl and effects on fetal and maternal thyroid hormone homeostasis in the rat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Earlier studies at our laboratory indicated that several hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs) detected in human blood could specifically inhibit thyroxine (T4) transport by competitive binding to the thyroid hormone transport protein ...

Preoperative Total Iron‐Binding Capacity Is a Novel Surrogate Marker of Short‐ and Long‐Term Outcomes After Liver Resection for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
HCC patients with low preoperative TIBC levels experienced significantly more frequent post‐hepatectomy complications. Furthermore, these patients were significantly correlated with worse survival. Preoperative serum TIBC levels may be a novel surrogate marker of postoperative complications and long‐term survival after hepatectomy.

Relationship between serum prealbumin level and prognosis of community-acquired bacterial meningitis in adults: a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology
BackgroundLow serum prealbumin levels have been identified as a predictor of infectious complication in critically ill patients. However, the association in patients with Community-acquired bacterial meningitis (CABM) remains unclear.

Blood Lactate as a Prognostic Biomarker for Survival and Weight Loss in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: An Exploratory–Validation Study

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Lactate is increasingly recognized as an energy substrate, but its relevance to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) remains unclear. We examined whether blood lactate is associated with survival and weight loss in ALS. Methods This retrospective study included an Australian exploratory cohort and a Japanese validation cohort with clinical ...
