Prebiotic digestion and fermentation [PDF]

open access: bronzeThe American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2001
Prebiotics, as currently conceived of, are all carbohydrates of relatively short chain length. To be effective they must reach the cecum. Present evidence concerning the 2 most studied prebiotics, fructooligosaccharides and inulin, is consistent with their resisting digestion by gastric acid and pancreatic enzymes in vivo.

Awareness, knowledge, and beliefs about probiotics and prebiotics among Saudi adults: a cross-sectional study [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology
BackgroundProbiotics and Prebiotics are essential for supporting both overall health and gastrointestinal health. However, the perception of these dietary components among the general public in Saudi Arabia is not well understood.

Probiotics and prebiotics in the elderly [PDF]

open access: bronzePostgraduate Medical Journal, 2004
Abstract Probiotics (usually lactobacilli and bifidobacteria) and prebiotics (non-digestible oligosaccharides) have been shown to be useful in preventing certain disease conditions as well as possibly promoting specific aspects of health. In the present review, the evidence from clinical trials for benefits from probiotics and prebiotics

In vitro gastrointestinal digestion of Lentinus squarrosulus powder and impact on human fecal microbiota

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Humans have long-used mushrooms as food and medicine, but digestion and colonic fermentation of most mushrooms, including Lentinus squarrosulus is markedly unknown. Here, nutritional profile, digestion and colonic fermentation of L.

Potential Effects of Prebiotics on Gastrointestinal and Immunological Modulation in the Feeding of Healthy Dogs: A Review

open access: yesFermentation, 2023
One of the most studied functional foods in dog feed today is the prebiotic. Prebiotics are known for their modulating effects on the intestinal microbiota, fecal characteristics, and the immune system, which promotes beneficial effects to the host ...

The promotion mechanism of prebiotics for probiotics: A review

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2022
Prebiotics and probiotics play a positive role in promoting human nutrition and health. Prebiotics are compounds that cannot be digested by the host, but can be used and fermented by probiotics, so as to promote the reproduction and metabolism of ...

Prebiotic Organic Microstructures [PDF]

open access: yesNature Precedings, 2011
AbstractMicro- and sub-micrometer spheres, tubules and fiber-filament soft structures have been synthesized in our experiments conducted with 3 MeV proton irradiations of a mixture of simple inorganic constituents, CO, N2 and H2O. We analysed the irradiation products, with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).

UV Transmission in Natural Waters on Prebiotic Earth [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Ultraviolet (UV) light plays a key role in surficial theories of the origin of life, and numerous studies have focused on constraining the atmospheric transmission of UV radiation on early Earth. However, the UV transmission of the natural waters in which origins-of-life chemistry (prebiotic chemistry) is postulated to have occurred is poorly ...

Prebiotic Chemistry of Pluto [PDF]

open access: yesAstrobiology, 2019
We present the case for the presence of complex organic molecules, such as amino acids and nucleobases, formed by abiotic processes on the surface and in near-subsurface regions of Pluto. Pluto's surface is tinted with a range of non-ice substances with colors ranging from light yellow to red to dark brown; the colors match those of laboratory organic ...
