Atomic scale characterization of carbon partitioning and transition carbide precipitation in a medium carbon steel during quenching and partitioning process

open access: yes, 2022
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and 3D Atom probe tomography (APT) were used to investigate the elemental partitioning, carbon (C) redistribution and carbide precipitation associated with quenching and partitioning (Q<P) treatment of medium C ...

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.

Mineralogically-induced metal partitioning during the evaporative precipitation of efflorescent sulfate salts from acid mine drainage

open access: yes, 2019
Efflorescent sulfate salts constitute a transient storage of acidity and metals during the dry season in mining areas affected by acid mine drainage, especially under semiarid climates. The main goal of this work was to study the metal partitioning among

A Non‐Sigmoidal‐Curve‐Dependent Dynamic Threshold Method Improves Precipitation Phase Partitioning in the Northern Hemisphere

open access: yesWater Resources Research
Given the significant impact of precipitation phase transitions on water and energy balances, accurate phase partitioning is essential for hydrological modeling.

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...

Spatial partitioning of terrestrial precipitation and corresponding dataset agreement

open access: yes
<p>The study of the water cycle at planetary scale is crucial for our understanding of large-scale climatic processes. However, very little is known about how terrestrial precipitation is distributed across different environments. In this study, we

Biomass partitioning in grassland plants along independent gradients in temperature and precipitation

open access: yes, 2016
How plants allocate biomass to different parts strongly affects vegetation dynamics and ecosystem processes and services such as productivity and carbon storage.

Spatial partitioning of terrestrial precipitation reveals varying dataset agreement across different environments

open access: yes
The study of the water cycle at planetary scale is crucial for our understanding of large-scale climatic processes. However, very little is known about how terrestrial precipitation is distributed across different environments.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.
