An AI‐Driven Biomass Estimation Tool Enabling Population‐ and Specimen‐Level Variation Analyses: A Case Study on Parasitoid Flies

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We present the first ecological application of InsectMorphoAI, a tool estimating curvilinear body length and body volume from two‐dimensional fly images. Applying this approach to tachinid flies from a Mediterranean forest near Rome, Italy, we quantified species composition, abundance, body size, body proportions, and biomass proxies in assemblages ...

Host Detection by Cuckoo Bumblebees: Choice Experiments Reveal Non‐Visual Cues Support Host Detection, but Accuracy Is Low

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Female Bombus vestalis cuckoo bumblebees were introduced to a flight arena containing four identical opaque boxes, featuring slits to release volatiles from the bumblebees inside. When only one box contained a developing host colony, the cuckoos were able to locate their hosts among the four boxes with 66.2% accuracy.

Time‐Course of Attainment and Reversal of Thermal Acclimation in the Invasive Fall Armyworm

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Heat acclimation was elicited within minutes with stronger responses at higher temperatures while cold acclimation provided no measurable plastic benefit in the invasive fall armyworm. Prolonged high‐temperature acclimation enhanced heat tolerance and delayed reversal of physiological gains while reversal of acclimation was temperature‐dependent ...

Life Table and Reproductive Traits of Eumerus obliquus (Diptera: Syrphidae) Reared in Captivity

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Age‐stage specific survival rate (above) and daily averages of oviposition and hatching (below) of Eumerus obliquus under captive conditions. The curve illustrates the probability that a newly laid egg will survive to a specific age and stage. The results revealed a positive population growth trend, the larval stage being the most critical phase in the
