Predictive accuracy and explained variation
Statistics in Medicine, 2003AbstractMeasures of the predictive accuracy of regression models quantify the extent to which covariates determine an individual outcome. Explained variation measures the relative gains in predictive accuracy when prediction based on covariates replaces unconditional prediction.

Strive for accuracy—improvement of predictions
Computers & Fluids, 1980Abstract Finite-difference approximations to the governing equations of fluid motinos are discussed for viscous three-dimensional flows for Reynolds numbers of several hundred, for three-dimensional incompressible and compressible boundary layers and for inviscid near-sonic supersonic flows.

Robust tests of predictive accuracy [PDF]
We propose robust counterparts to tests of equal forecast accuracy such as those proposed by Diebold and Mariano (1995) and West (1996). We illustrate the robustness problem and evaluate the size and the power properties of the classical and robust tests under various types of deviations from model assumptions.

Accuracy of ultrasound for the prediction of placenta accreta
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2014Ultrasound has been reported to be greater than 90% sensitive for the diagnosis of accreta. Prior studies may be subject to bias because of single expert observers, suspicion for accreta, and knowledge of risk factors. We aimed to assess the accuracy of ultrasound for the prediction of accreta.Patients with accreta at a single academic center were ...

Concept Simplification and Prediction Accuracy
1988A recently reported phenomenon in machine concept learning is that concept descriptions can be simplified with little ill-effect (or even positive effects) on classification accuracy, but there has been little qualification of this observation. Experiments using Quinlan's learning from examples system, ID3, and Fisher's conceptual clustering system ...

In this chapter, support vector machines (SVM) are introduced - a kind of classifiers developed specifically to achieve high predictive accuracy. First, the basic variant for binary classification into linearly separable classes is presented, which is then followed by extensions to non-linear classification, multiple classes and noise-tolerant ...

Fold Recognition by Predicted Alignment Accuracy
IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, 2005One of the key components in protein structure prediction by protein threading technique is to choose the best overall template for a given target sequence after all the optimal sequence-template alignments are generated. The chosen template should have the best alignment with the target sequence since the three-dimensional structure of the target ...

The accuracy of predictions: A reply
Synthese, 1975"All good science consists, and all good philosophy consists, of lucky oversimplification or, if you prefer the term, idealization" wrote Popper a little while ago (1974, p. 976). Granted that "some oversimplifications are very much better than others" (op. cit., p.
