Preliminary Breakdown Pulses (PBP): A review on available data and models

Electric Power Systems Research
Lightning is a major risk for humans, animals, and electrical systems. Many researches focused on the fully developed events, such as the Return Stroke (RS) current, the emitted electromagnetic fields, and the phenomenon modeling. However, there is poor understanding regarding precursors, such as Preliminary Breakdown Pulses (PBP).

Characteristic pulse trains of preliminary breakdown in four isolated small thunderstorms

Journal of Geophysical Research D: Atmospheres, 2017
AbstractUsing a low‐frequency six‐station local network, preliminary breakdown (PB) pulses not followed or followed by negative return stroke (RS), which are defined as PB‐type and PB cloud‐to‐ground (PBCG)‐type flashes, are analyzed based on four isolated small thunderstorms for the first time.

Comparing Upward Negative Stepped Leader and Preliminary Breakdown Pulses [PDF]

open access: yes
The study explores the characteristics of upward negative stepped leader pulses recorded at the Säntis Tower in Switzerland. Analysis of simultaneous channel-base current and 14.7-km vertical electric field data revealed two distinct types of pulses associated with upward negative stepped leaders [2].Category A pulses were characterized by ...

Electric field changes generated by the preliminary breakdown for the negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes in Malaysia and Sweden [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2012
We present the study of the electric field changes generated by the preliminary breakdown for negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes in Malaysia and Sweden concerning the association of slow field changes associated in preliminary breakdown process ...

Perbedaan karakteristik pulsa peter narrow bipolar dengan Preliminary breakdown [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017

Observed preliminary breakdown pulses of intracloud discharges

2017 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Power Systems (ICHVEPS), 2017
Compact intracloud discharge (CID) pulses have strong radio frequency radiation, large amplitude and a short duration of several microseconds. There are two types of CIDs, namely positive and negative CID. CID electric field signatures appear without any detectable initial breakdown process.

Microchip Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy: A Preliminary Feasibility Investigation

Applied Spectroscopy, 2004
A commercial, 7 μJ/pulse, 550 ps microchip laser is used to induce plasma on Pb, Si, Cu, Fe, Ni, Ti, Zn, Ta, and Mo foils and a Si wafer. The measured plasma lifetime is comparable with the duration of the laser pulse (a few ns). The plasma continuum radiation is low, while some of the strong resonance lines (e.g., Zn 213.86 nm) show self-reversal ...

Influence of Preliminary Electron Feeding on Breakdown of Air by Laser

Advanced Solid-State Photonics, 2009
We examined the influence of preliminary feeding of electrons from the small breakdown produced by the femtosecond laser pulse into the breakdown produced by nanosecond laser pulse. We also observed the patterns of plasma emissions.

Preliminary observations on the breakdown of coir in soil

Plant and Soil, 1979
Coco fibres are used as a wrapper of plastic drain pipes. An investigation has been made of the decomposition of these fibres in soil. Unaffected and partly decayed fibres were washed and placed on cellulose-containing agar plates. Unaffected coir rarely showed growth. Around the partly decayed fibres nearly always fungi developed.
