Observed preliminary breakdown pulses of intracloud discharges
2017 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Power Systems (ICHVEPS), 2017Compact intracloud discharge (CID) pulses have strong radio frequency radiation, large amplitude and a short duration of several microseconds. There are two types of CIDs, namely positive and negative CID. CID electric field signatures appear without any detectable initial breakdown process.

Preliminary breakdown pulses of cloud-to-ground lightning in winter thunderstorms in Japan
Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2013Abstract Preliminary breakdown pulses (PBP) of 26 positive and 104 negative cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes observed in winter thunderstorms in Hokuriku region of Japan are analyzed. Pulses in PBP train are mainly bipolar. Zero-crossing time of each pulse is about 7 us and total duration of each pulse train is about 1 ms.

Preliminary Breakdown Pulses (PBP): A review on available data and models
Electric Power Systems ResearchLightning is a major risk for humans, animals, and electrical systems. Many researches focused on the fully developed events, such as the Return Stroke (RS) current, the emitted electromagnetic fields, and the phenomenon modeling. However, there is poor understanding regarding precursors, such as Preliminary Breakdown Pulses (PBP).

Propagation of preliminary breakdown pulses preceding cloud-to-ground lightning discharges
2015 1st URSI Atlantic Radio Science Conference (URSI AT-RASC), 2015A sequence of electromagnetic pulses lasting from a few milliseconds to several tens of milliseconds is usually observed prior to the first return stroke of a cloud-to-ground lightning flash. The sequence is composed of three parts. It begins with a group of relatively large bipolar pulses which are believed to be connected with preliminary breakdown ...

Comparison of preliminary breakdown pulses observed in Sweden and in Sri Lanka
Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 1998Abstract In this paper we have analysed breakdown pulse trains preceding the first return stroke in 47 negative cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes observed in Sri Lanka (tropics) and that in 41 negative CG flashes recorded in Sweden (temperate regions). In the data obtained in Sri Lanka, breakdown pulses could be detected only in nine flashes. In

A Survey of Measurements and Analyses of Preliminary Breakdown Pulses in Lightning Flashes
2025 IEEE International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering and 2025 IEEE Industrial and Commercial Power Systems Europe (EEEIC / I&CPS Europe)Lightning represents a major hazard to humans, buildings, electrical and electronic installations. To date, the majority of investigations have concentrated on the Return Stroke (RS) phase of the lightning flash. Nonetheless, a significant gap persists in the comprehension of RS antecedents, particularly Preliminary Breakdown (PB) pulses, which ...
