Inhibition of Premature Labor by Terbutaline

Terbutaline was administered to 50 women, all diagnosed as being in labor prior to 36 weeks' gestation. In 47, uterine activity was initially arrested with intravenous therapy. The infusion rate required to arrest uterine activity ranged from 10 to 80 microgram/min and 21 of the 50 patients (42%) required more than one intravenous infusion. The average

Abstract. One hundred and eight patients with imminent premature labor in the 24–36th week of pregnancy and with intact membranes were allocated randomly to two groups. Fifty‐four patients were treated with intravenous infusion of 12–50 μg/min of salbutamol (VentolineR) and 4 mg was subsequently given orally at 4‐hour intervals.

Abstract Published scientific laboratory and clinical data indicate that analgesia during premature labor is detrimental to the newborn. An anterospective study of 1,002 premature labors in which meperidine, scopolamine, and a placebo were given is analyzed.
