Prenatal ethanol exposure : gonadal axis influences on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal responsiveness in prepubertal rats

open access: yes, 2005
The mechanisms underlying altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity following prenatal ethanol exposure are unknown. Previous findings from our laboratory have revealed that rats prenatally exposed to ethanol (E) differ from their control ...

Left and right myocardial performance indices in growth‐restricted fetuses: systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesUltrasound in Obstetrics &Gynecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives To evaluate alterations in fetal cardiac function in pregnancies complicated by fetal growth restriction (FGR) by synthesizing evidence on myocardial performance index (MPI) and its constituent parameters for both the left and right ventricles.

Risk of minor congenital heart defect in infants conceived via assisted reproductive technology: cohort study from the Copenhagen Baby Heart Study

open access: yesUltrasound in Obstetrics &Gynecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Infertility affects up to 20% of couples in high‐income countries, which has led to an increased use of assisted reproductive technology (ART). While previous studies have linked ART to a higher risk of major congenital heart defects (CHD), less is known about the associated risk of minor CHD.

Effects of prenatal ethanol exposure on cognition/behavior and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal stress response in adult rats

open access: yes, 1998
The maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy produces a wide range of abnormalities in the offspring. The main purpose of this thesis was to investigate the (1) cognitive deficits and behavioral abnormalities and (2) hypothalamic-pituitary ...

Windows of susceptibility of prenatal and childhood exposure to air pollution and lung function at 6–8 years in the Spanish INMA (INfancia y Medio Ambiente) birth cohort [PDF]

open access: yes
Background: Air pollution exposure during pregnancy and childhood has been linked to lung development deficits in children, however, few studies have identified potential windows of susceptibility to air pollution exposure from conception to early ...

All roads lead to infection: A mechanistic model to assess transmission routes of brucellosis in a wild ungulate population

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Wildlife and domestic populations frequently share diseases with a potential for cross‐species transmission, posing significant threats to animal and human health, economy and biodiversity conservation.

The mediating role of maternal inflammation on associations between first-trimester plasticizer exposure and personal-social and language in infants

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Background: Maternal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) or phthalates (PAEs) increases inflammation and the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. However, limited epidemiological studies have examined the neurodevelopmental effects of co-exposure

Maternal glucocorticoids have persistent effects on offspring social phenotype irrespective of opportunity for social buffering

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study tests whether early‐life maternal association buffers offspring from the effects of prenatal stress in a facultatively social lizard. Despite clear effects of maternal glucocorticoids on growth and social behaviour, social associations did not mitigate these effects, revealing limits to social buffering in this species.

How Does SNAP Access Prior to Pregnancy Affect Maternal and Infant Health Outcomes?

open access: yesThe Milbank Quarterly, EarlyView.
Policy Points Reimposing work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—by removing temporary, location‐based waivers—causes a decline in food assistance participation among childless women. This loss of nutritional support prior to pregnancy is linked to tangible, negative health outcomes for their infants.
